I recently removed upper ball joints but didn't mark which side was which. Are the driver side and passenger side upper control arms interchangeable when the ball joint is removed? They appear identical
According to my notes
"The lowers are the same left to right but according to master parts book left and right uppers are different. It says LH upper will have a daub of yellow paint on metal tag if original."
The core arms look the same to me, but to make sure I always mark the side when I remove from a parts car. Perhaps someone can confirm they can be swapped.
Thanks for the help! Unfortunately the arms were painted at some point, I do recall one side having a little ground strap attached to the arm bushing and one side didn't not sure if that would identify them...
There should be a ground strap on both and remember trying to use that as my guide but remember them being not consistent in terms of which end they were on. If you have a picture inside the engine bay showing the upper control arms that show that ground strap that would confirm for you which side is which.
OK. So I looked at my upper control pictures on file and ALL have the ground strap on the rear. I checked the Shop Manual and MPB illustrations and they have the ground strap on the rear. I checked the very stock 1963 Parts Car I have outside and my own 64 CDV and both have ground straps on rear on both left and right side. So, if you still have the ground strap connected that will tell you which side as the ground should be on the rear. I think what I had seen maybe last year was a car where someone had just installed the ground on the front after some rework. You can install on front or rear, but I am now sure after some research they were on rear from factory.

When I replaced the bushings and ball joints on my 63, I didn't see any difference in the bushing shaft or the control arm from the right or left side except for the ball joints themselves. Like Jason mentioned the ground strap was attached to the rear bushing retainer bolt on the right and left control arm. In that end, I didn't bother keeping them marked when I pressed the old joints and bushings out but did keep aware of which one went right and left after the new ball joint was installed. I think when the cars were new, Cadillac replaced the control arm as an assembly therefore the factory marking Jason mentioned to identify the right from the left.
