I want to get my 63 to cool down better. It is a non ac car w/o a fan housing. It has a flex fan on it but the gauge goes to the middle in just a few miles. It has not over heated. I had the old Harrison rad cleaned out a while back and isn't leaking. I have a 50/50 mix of  fresh coolant in it. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestion about cooling her down. I have thought about a 160 degree thermostat also.

I drove her around about 30 miles in the middle of the day stopping several; places  and several red lights and stop signs I parked it for a few minutes read the digital IR heat gun on several spots in the engine bay. Everything on the top side except the middle of the intake read @ 180. the top of the rad and the top hose read about 180 I checked the bottom hose and lower part of the rad and it read @ 150. I drove it @ 15 mile mid day Outside temp here is 92 on the open road with no stops and did the readings again with the same results. Should the bottom of the rad be a 30 degree difference? I seems like a good thing. The car gauge never went passed straight up in the middle.  I have no leaks and I hate to start pulling parts off. Thanks all of you for all the great input.

Dennis. Simply crank the car, and let it warm up to operating temperature by driving it a mile or two, or just let it idle for 15 minutes, then while it is running, get the temp reading on engine block, preferably next to the temp sending unit. Top of intake away from the center exhaust channel is fine. Taking temps after the car has been turned off a few minutes or taking reading on the the radiator hoses,or something not physically connected to the engine block metal like the radiator will give you less than engine operating temperatures, especially on the heater hoses with water being let in then shut off.  Just fire it up, run a few minutes and point next to the temp sending unit with car still running.  I have good used sending units for $10.

The temp sending unit is next to the dist

These are correct NEW temp sending units. I run this on my own 63, and have recommended this for years now.
