Hello All, after replacing the voltage regulator, alternator, checking and replacing wires to alternator plug, test voltage on battery, good, voltage on alternator good. Checked ground with multi meter checked voltage going in regulator connection, good. Checked 6 amp fuse on right fender goid - stumped cannot figure out why alternator does not charge battery. HEEEELP!
second thing I found this (fuseable link?) on green, red2, blue wire going in firewall, anyone know what and why it is?AB6173F1-C94E-4B27-A206-4A7687625B7A.jpeg. Thanks
Get to where the negative battery cable connects to the cars frame under the battery shelf and clean that to shinny metal and put it back together
clean the battery terminals to shinny metal
A bad connection at those locations will not make the charge circuit complete
Just my best guess
Not sure just using a spray on the regulator harness will clean up the metal terminals inside enough
The individual clips in the harness can be remove and reinstalled
They snap into the harness
You will need to release them by studying them to see the clip that holds each one in place
I slide a number 11 exactly blade into the back of the harness to release the holding clip being very careful
They will then slide out of the harness
Once out of the harness you can clean the metal connections themselves and reinstall them
Do only one at a time not to mix them up
Now sure you have good clean metal to metal
Thanks Tony and Ginny 429 I will try that as soon as I can.
Hi Keith. Did you ever find out what was causing the problem? I am having a similar problem. Thanks.
I think he just did the things we suggested in this tread to correct his problem
Good basic trouble shooting for the charging system
Or —you could go to your favorite auto store and have them test the system and tell you exactly the problem Is for free ( to sell you parts )
Prevents you from throwing parts at the car you do not need
Always CB —the battery the alternator or the regulator at fault
First thing I would do with our year Cadillacs is clean the grounds and terminals on the regulator and neg Bat terminal to frame ground
Cleaning grounds and electrical terminals on our cars brings most things back to life
A working charging system will put out 14 v with the engine running at the battery terminals
A few guys on here and me have corrected there problem by cleaning up the regulator ( that will turn on the Generator light ( that is really the Alternator light ) on the dash when the alternator or the regulator has an issue ( not much warning if the bat may be on its last leg and causing issues )

So since I posted I found a rusted spring in the alternator glass fuse. I replaced with new inline fuse holder and 6 amp fuse. Now I have Gen light at the dash ( did not have that before) but still have 12v and dropping at the battery. Before today I installed new regulator and alternator. Cleaned voltage regulator ground and the ground under the battery tray. Does the gen light generally mean the regulator or alternator is bad?
Per your Owners Manual page 6 Under 'Generator Indicator Light':
"The light, labeled "Gen", glows whenever the generator (alternator) is not charging. It is basically saying th alternator is not charging the battery.
When the Gen light comes on —on the dash it means that the charging circuit is not working correctly
It is usually the alternator or the regulator that turns the Gen light on the dash ( when the 6 v fuse is good )
In my case the regulator had to be cleaned up
If for Any reason you cause an electrical flash in the cars electrical system( did not disconnect the negative bat terminal when doing electrical trouble shooting ) there is a chance you could have damaged the regulator and the dash light could come on from that incident
The electrical flash can do in the regulator ( in a flash —-LOL ! )
Sorry— but every time—— I see a picture of the —rigged resistor —it cracks me up laughing
Might have something to do with the coat hanger wire
You can fix ANYTHING with a coat hanger and Duct Tape you know - I Have !!
Now that a piece of creative engineering if I ever saw one — and I am sure it does a great job and works just fine
Just gotta love this stuff
