Hi

just wondering if anyone else had a problem with their fuel gauge going up to full when key is turned to the on position or when the car is running.  it goes back to empty when key is in the off position. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks all

Check the plug to the fuel sending unit. Pull down the fuel door (rear license plate) and it's the right bottom terminal plug. If that is unplugged, the fuel gauge will read over full when the key is on. Hopefully that's your problem. Otherwise it could be anything in the circuit (sending unit, broken wire, fuel gauge) etc.

Thanks I will check it.

Stephen, I  had this problem awhile back. Kurt is correct; the small metal strip on my fuel sender had cracked. I removed the gas tank and soldered it back. But check your plug connection first, alot less work.

It is a ground issue.  2 wires come out the back of the of the gas tank.  A black wire goes to the back cross member and is held in with  self tapping screw. Undue it and clean the metal for a good contact.

More than likely it is the ground strap inside the tank on the sending unit, as mentioned earlier.

hi guys,

thanks for all the input on the fuel gauge issue. I checked the ground strap and cleaned it but it was not the problem. I was hoping for a little luck but it looks like the tank is going to have to be removed and see what's going on. I will keep everybody posted as to the result.  thanks again!

Hey Stephen, be sure to wear your eye protection when dropping the tank . Amazing how so much dust & dirt can get on top of it.

Use rubber gas line hose made for ethanol fuel when it goes back together

Enjoy

So my 63 guide matic headlamps stay on low beam all the time. I have so far bypassed the system and everything works normal. I have been thru the trouble shooting in the manual but this is where the confusion begins.on my car when the power relay is powered I have low beam and when its not powered I have highbeam, this appears to be opposite what the diagnosis says should be correct. The wiring is all original and no wires have been mixed up.has anyone ever unplugged the 2 wire connector…

Stuck at two red (dash) lights!

I hope someone can help solve these two electrical problems that appeared one after the other.

By way of background: The car, a '64 Eldorado has very limited use. It was at a restoration shop for 15 months until last January-  that supposedly did a bunch of wiring repairs including rebuilding the gas gauge that still hasn't worked properly, and the clock that hasn't worked, and re-soldering the broken wires in the drive door. All window and seat controls appear to be…
