I have a 63 with Petronix and Edelbrock. Yesterday I adjusted timing according to service manual (disconnected and plugged the vacuum line from the distributor and adjusted to 5 degrees). Car was idling great but immediately when I re-connected the vacuum hose it started to idled roughly. I measured the advance and it was something like 18 degrees, which I guess is the maximum from the vacuum. Is this normal? I pulled and plugged the vacuum hose and took it for a spin and I didn’t notice any difference in performance. My vacuum hose is connected to the right outlet in Edelbrock, left one is connected to AC, I read somewhere that amount of vacuum is different in these two outlets, so question is can I switch them?

Put the AC vac line on the intake vacuum T.  You should put the distrib vac line on the ported vac line on the carb.

Check the advance weights up top also.

The vacuum T for  the  AC that Russ is talking about is behind the carb on the intake manifold 

You now have it in the wrong place

Does not go to the carb 

Plug any other open lines of that T or  you are causing a vacuum leak into the intake 

You need to plug the vacuum line from the carb to the dist on the carbs side of the hose —-when doing the timing —not the dist vacuum activator side or you have a major vacuum leak into the intake manifold going on 

The dist weights are in the dist under the rotor and SB cleaned and greased ( white lithium grease ) as they are a part of the timings advance mechanism 

The vacuum line from the Edelbrock to the dist get attached to the vacuum port on the left ( sitting in the car ) and the other vacuum port gets plugged off 

That location will give you the timing curve you want for best engine performance 

Only use—— dist caps with brass terminals or the  dist cap will leave you stranded at some time in the future 

When you do the timing and put all back together you can see if your dist vacuum advance is working by revving  the engine with the timing light on the crank timing pulley

The timing mark will move to advanced timing while watching the mark 

Always check your timing mark again after you clamp down the dist ( in case The setting moves )

Stock timing is 5 degrees but some of the gear heads here choose to run 8 degrees for a little more low end torque 

That call is up to you 

That should get you to know what you need to know to finish you repair

You must have the car at 480 Rpms—— in gear per the manual 

I feel that in gear is far to dangerous so I set mine at 550- 600  RPMs to allow for putting the car in gear and rpms dropping down 

The  idle RPMs effect the timing mark setting ( changes it some ) 

The Rpm reading should be done on — an expended RPM meter —( more accurate )  which is a part of a dwell angle meter —-used to adjust points when you have those ( you do not have points ) 

Clean and use —white out on your timing plate and the crank pully to make seeing the marks much easier on the timing light

Thanks for the replies! I measured the vacuum from both Edelbrock outlets, from the right one it's 15 units at idle and from the left it's 0 and rises when rpm's rise. I put the dist vacuum line to the left one, as advised and now car idles like it should.

But the vacuum line that was on the left; it's coming from the firewall (left one from the package of  four vacuum lines) No idea where it should go. I found the manifold vacuum t behind the carb, and  this line is smaller and I believe it should go to someplace else.

The hose in your hand goes to the Recirc. Air nipple on the 20%-!00% Vacuum Power Unit

Thanks! I guess you are right and it should be connected to 20-100% vacuum power unit. Looks like the nipple from my unit is broken (see picture) Any idea what this recirc. pipe is doing, meaning should I leave it open or should I plug it?

I would plug the line you removed from that port until you locate where it goes 

Someone with a 63 should help with that vacuum lines correct location

I see you already have a hose to the 20-80% vacuum valve —so not sure —that Anders suggestion is correct

Your third picture showing the fire wall with a vacuum line cut and an electrical line coming into the engine bay 

That vacuum line is for the idle up feature that has been eliminated and should be plugged if not being used now

Hello All.

I will be replacing the starter solenoid tomorrow (actually my mechanic will do the work, I'll just supervise). In checking the FSM electrical schematic and chapter verbiage, I don't see anything that looks like (or is referred to as) a starter Relay. It seems the Starter Solenoid serves the function and there's no separate relay. Right or Wrong?

Hello All.

I believe the starter solenoid has gone bad in my 64 DeVille. When I turn the key, often all I get is a click, then if I try a few times again the starter turns perfectly.
