Drove my car to work today and when i went to lunch she just up and stopped running. It didn't take but just a couple of minutes to find the problem and it was the the wire that goes to the condenser.  The car backfired while coasting over to the shoulder of the road, i guess the condenser wire made contact for just a second.
I replaced the condenser and points and when i started the engine the lifters were making a lot of noise and has a miss to it now,I pulled the pushrods thinking it may have bent one from the backfire but all were good. Could the backfire have caused a lifter to collapse? Never had this happen to me before so i was just curious. Thanks for any info.

Did you try to start the car when it died while rolling in gear to the side of the road --that would cause a backfire
I blew up a new muffler doing that

Did the lifter noise settle down and go away after a few minutes of running?

Enjoy

I did, And the lifters never stopped making noise.

I would check the engine compression to see what it looks like.  The "lifter noise" could very well be something more nefarious depending upon the severity of the backfire.  No telling what damage (if any) was done when the ignition intermittently fired.

I would think a misfire could jam a valve or two into its seat possibly damaging the valve train working the valves in that cylinder

Just a TIP - if you car suddenly ---dies at speed in gear--- Do Not Try To start the car until you are at a complete stop on the shoulder of the road to avoid the above

Enjoy

Bad thing is i know better,

To add:
I blew out a brand new muffler trying to start up while rolling after a stall and this gentelman most probably did damege to his engine doing the same

Enjoy

I do believe i got real lucky, I came home today after work and started my car up and there was NO more noise. I let run long enough to reach operating temp and all was still good.

I love when the car fixes itself

Enjoy

where do I find a new and better motor?

Posted by john kilbourne on May 24, 2018 at 11:43am 11 Comments

My '64 convert is getting better, but the engine remains questionable. Starts and runs well enough, powerful, but I think I hear a main bearing banging, the balance is not great and I'd like to upgrade to fuel injection if I can.

Are there dependable remans available of good quality? Are new crate engines available? Will more advanced engines from newer years fit?

Also, please, the diff ratio is quite high, lots of RPMs compared to today's cars. Are there diffs with lower…
