Hi guys, I inherited a car from a neighbor (long story) and hoping to get some good advice here.

The car: 1964 Cadillac Deville Convertible, 64k original miles. CA car. Original owner (neighbor) had the car in his garage from brand new, passed away in 90 and the car was parked and not driven since. 100% original, no rust at all, interior needs some work on seats (cracked). 

Started the car and mechanic said $1200 to get it running (not 100% sure what it would entail).

Brakes locked up, paint in ok shape but needs a repaint I am sure (will post pictures soon).

I really like the car but don't have time or skill to work on it at this point (newborn, etc)

So my questions are:

1) what issues should I look for in terms of common problems?

2) what does a new interior and new paint job of decent quality cost on these cars?

3) what is the car worth now? (the mechanic I brought it to, offered to buy the car right off the bat since he supposedly wants it for himself for 9k) Is this a fair price, or is he taking me for a ride?

4) Any other advice for a newbie owner or things I should look for?

The car seems to not have AC, not sure if it has the hydramic or the Turbo Hydramatic (how can I tell). Also is there a way of figuring out what options are on the car with codes or?

It will be interesting to see photos but my first thought is if the paint is original you might consider not repainting. Original survivors are becoming more and more desirable in the collectable car world. Even if the paint is oxidized and there are minor imperfections here and there you might want to keep it original. I'm curious what a one owner/garaged/parked for 27 years '64 looks like.

I would definitely hold off on the mechanics's 9K offer until you get an idea on the value. It could be fair but that all depends on condition.

Thanks. I'll upload pictures tomorrow and would be very happy to get advice and what else I should look for to figure out condition/ value. In terms of the paint, it's decent in parts but there are touch ups (with nail polish, lol) and on the left side there is some minor surface rust in spots since the house had a roof leak which dripped on the car...

As far as the transmission goes, look at the sequence for the transmission indicator on the dashboard. If "R" for reverse is next to "P" for park it's a Turbo Hydramatic. If "R" is all the way to the right on the indicator, it's a 4 speed Hydramatic.

Hope this answers a few questions to start.

Do you have a friend or relo that might be able to help with getting the brakes free again and stuff like that?

Oh, and based on what you've said, I think it would be worth more than 9k for sure.

Don't have any friends who are handy in terms of working on cars, I am in the Walnut Creek area. Any recommendations for good people or is anyone interested in taking a look in person and giving some advice. Would appreciate if anyone is local.

Welcome to Cadillac heaven. Rust free? That mechanic is trying to rip you off. Options? I don't know what you mean? Look at the car and you will know what it has. Do a search of this site and the help section for a lot of information. If the car is original car with no restoration then all and I maen ALL rubber parts fuel and brakes wise need to be changed. A 64 deVille convertible is a turbohydromatic. Paint and interior? A few houndred each up to tens of thousands depends on what you want done.

First clue: Series 62 had the 4-speed Hydra-Matic and the DeVille had the new 3-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic. Second clue: Cadillac had two convertible models in 1964, the DeVille and the Fleetwood. Both equipped with the Turbo Hydra-Matic. Ergo; your car is a 1964 Convertible therefore it has a Turbo Hydra-Matic.

The car doesn't look to bad and if you clean it up good you will get a lot better idea of the condition. 

Worth? A DeVille Convertible in good condition is 20K or more. To bring your car to good condition letting a mechanic do it for you will cost you more than 20K. If you look on Jasons car you see a near perfect DeVille. He has spent more than 40K on it. And it will be hard for him to get that back, if ever.

9K as an offer is not to bad considering your situation. If you have a proper garage, tools, knowledge and time you could have the greatest experience in your life fixing her up. It will set you back an arm and a leg but it will be worth it, if you think of it as a hobby. If you plan on making money out of it. Forget it and walk away.

My best advise to you is to clean the car good inside and out. Fill the tires. Put the car in a nice location. Take pictures of every area including engine bay, wheel wells, exhaust system, gas tank and undercarriage. Take close up pictures on the not so good areas (like dents and rust). Post it all on Ebay. The more you tell and show the better likelihood you have on selling it for more than 9K. Also keep in mind that your car might attract buyers overseas, so don't limit shipping.

Bad Guage?

So I am troubleshooting my fuel gauge issue. I bought a new sender and tested it. It  it goes from 1-ohm (empty) to 35-ohm (full). When I test it (outside the tank), when the float is in the up (full) position it only moves the gauge to about 1/2 full. When at the bottom (empty) position the gauge shows empty. This is the same issue I have when I fill and then use the gas in the tank - the gauge never reads ore than half full. Based on what I've read on this thread it would seem like the…
