sadly,, more woes,, Brakes!!

Well, after the EM thing, i took the car out for a ride, i was styling and profiling, waving at the chicks,, and wen i pull ed up to a stop, and gave it some brake, the whole car felt like it shook .

alarmed, i pulled over, looked for fluids, nothing leaking , now i have had the parking brake on for several days while it was on the blocks, and i know i had released it, so it was nt that, i dont think.

so, i got it home, nothing noted, but i did feel it sort of want to go into a skid at slight pressure from the back end, didnt feel like it was from the front brakes.  more of a drag skid than a putting on brakes too hard in ihefront skid.  anyway, sadly, i parked it.  Well, i thought , after about an hour, maybe take to liquor store about mile away, see how it felt for diagnosis.  at a very slow speed, brakes applied, the car just felt like it shook.,, that was before i got to the first end of the block.  so i backed up, parked it and said FK!!!!  went to friends house, couple hours later, came back, took around block, never felt the car shake, thing, but did get into the feeling the rear brakes were skidding at light pressure,, so  i got home, put in the back drive way,

now for history,  i replaced all brakes on front back in summer.  cylinders, shoes, springs, brake hoses, etc, with a kit with all the parts.. had drums re cut/ spun, what ever the term.  and up till today, every thing was hunky dory.  back brake were not dealt with at the time.   The skid feels like it is from the back.. sooooo the nagging question,  

what could THIS be??

I replced fronts w raybestos back in summer.  The locking up feels more like a squat in the rear brakes as opposed to lurching forwad on a front brake lockup.  And if i let go of brake pedal. Condition lets go.  Guess i will get it up and see whats behind the rear tires. I checked MC, had proper fluid in both reservoirs.  The manual does make a reoair suggestion or symptom for what i exoerience.

i got the drums off, but i have to say, getting the tire off,,   that was a real pain, i pulled the removable panel off, and yet, the tire would not come out, i had to let all the air out of the tire to get it out, and even then, it didnt want to come out.. maybe I'm missing something, but it was TUFF!

anyway, pulled it all out, i am guessing that i have t undo the 4 bolts behind the lug studs to get a look at that bearings, would that be correct,, ??  seems i would need to look at them if I'm in there anyway, may be why the bad shake,,,  i dont know, but i dont see a blow up diagram of the rear, so i will just assume it was similar to the front

every thing was in place other wise, a bit messy and gunky but a couple cans of brake cleaner and brush i got it clean,   i did not see any oil, gunk or trash on the shoes, which were not cracked and visually had fairly even wear.   inside the drums were smooth, no ridges,,

Just noticed the black fresh staining on the cylinder,  so i am going to figure they are done, 

Figured out y tire hard to remove, used lift on axle, so the tire didnt drop down.  Will save me two hours tomoro when checkinv other brake.  I did cleN out all the crud, much cleaner, no gunk,

Trying to open up and see the wheel bearings won't help you at all. It will only drain out the oil from the axle.

The noice from a damaged wheel bearing is a lot different from what you describe.

You have wheels with original rims and tires? If you do I don't see why it should be difficult to get the wheel off. But if you have some weird aftermarket crap then off course there could be clearance issues.

hey, yes,, i had a forrest gump moment on the wheel removal, i lifted form axle not bumper, so the wheels did nt hang, so they would nt come out,, really ass hat moment, but, i know it wont happen again

Wheel cylinder leak, and it has ruined the shoes with it.

Thanks for the cheery resoonse,  im guessing this would explain the squatting and skidding from the rear?

Looking on that picture it does not look like oil on the shoes. All looks normal and dry except a tad bit of blackish on the rubber on the wheel cylinder.

To rule out a cylinder leak we need to see both shoes and inside of the drum (both sides). But frankly what you do describe does sound like a leaking cylinder. New cylinders are not that expensive. Replace the rubber hose as well. If drum looks okay you can clean it out and replace the shoes. Won't cost you an arm and a leg.

Yes,  the crud is not on the shoes or inside drum sutface.  The inside area below cylnder is as you can see, very nasty and oily.  I hv ordered tge cylinders an two hoses.  Cnt hurt i guess,  replace them as the area inside there is justvreally gunked up.

I got started b4 i saw this. Picture of driver rear brake area.  This side shoes seem thinner. One is cracked.  No oil oinsideof tire or drum,  lots of oily gunk in there.

B4 i saw the early note of removing the 4 bolts, i did that,  puuled it out, and realized that itsnt what i thought it was,  some rusty looking fluid dripped out, maybe big teaspoon,  i put tgis back in its place immediately.    I dnt know if that helps anyone wuth anything, but thats what i did yesterday. I out it all back togetjer, took for couole looos to see if cleaning all that gunk out did anything.  First couole loops, tgere was no problem, no premature skid when braking or no shake when i let off brake. But after a couole loops, it began,  so thats what transpired after first drive test
