Figure I would ask the experts. I am buying a rebuilt 63 390 from one of the members here and am going to pull the non-original 390 motor out of my Caddy shortly and try to sell it. Details are:A…Continue

"Thank you all for your feedback. The replacement engine will ship around the second as long as everything looks good when Russ does the run stand test. We will begin pulling the '62 motor that's in it Tuesday when I reopen the shop after…"

"Parting it out is definitely the way to go if you have the place to store the items until they are sold.  Mine sold quickly for $500 but the biggest concern from potential buyers was the condition, site unseen.  Not knowing me, all they…"

"So you have a price indication of 500 USD. Considering the problem with smoke coming out where its not supposed to come out is of course an issue. Jack, my guess is that this motor should be in the ball park of the replacement motor, of equal…"

"I sold one on Ebay to a guy in the United Kingdom for about $500 a year or so ago.  It was a 54,000 mile original in similar condition to yours.  He paid the freight but I had to crate the thing up and help the truck driver load…"

"I would post to the CLC Forums (www.forums.CadillacLaSalleClub.org) and any number of "Cadillac Classified" groups on Facebook that span the 1962 390 and prior model years and engines. If this were a 1963 390 I would be more inclined to…"

"Thank you. It certainly wouldn't be a problem to disassemble the motor and sell it that way. I've been extremely surprised at how few 390's are out there for sale. And if they are they've been rebuilt. Hard to gauge what a fair…"

"Ebay is the obvious place to see what a motor is "worth". Or Craiglist. My bet is that you get more money out of it if you sell it as separate parts. Basically selling tops, short block, carburetor, generator and so on as parts. You can…"

Figure I would ask the experts. I am buying a rebuilt 63 390 from one of the members here and am going to pull the non-original 390 motor out of my Caddy shortly and try to sell it. Details are:A complete 390 out of a 62 6-window sedan? Engine code is 62K......No knocking or valve train noise. Pulling it because it was not the period correct motor and because of bottom end blow buy. Will come with the Generator, Power Steering Pump, Intake and Early Edelbrock Carb. The engine is currently in…See More

"Don't see why the extra 39 cub inch would make a large difference. A 1963 390 would be most correct. And whenever you sell the car a buyer would most likely pay more for an "original" setup. If you buy Russ 390 then you get the…"

"To be sure, the '64-67 429 is a wonderful motor.  This was the last rendition of the postwar "original" 331 V8s that came out in '49.  Cadillac punched it out as far as it could go by '64 so in '68 they…"

where do I find a new and better motor?

Posted by john kilbourne on May 24, 2018 at 11:43am 11 Comments

My '64 convert is getting better, but the engine remains questionable. Starts and runs well enough, powerful, but I think I hear a main bearing banging, the balance is not great and I'd like to upgrade to fuel injection if I can.

Are there dependable remans available of good quality? Are new crate engines available? Will more advanced engines from newer years fit?

Also, please, the diff ratio is quite high, lots of RPMs compared to today's cars. Are there diffs with lower…
