hey Jason I'm not sure I asked you this before but I have a spare edelbrock sitting in my garage is it really necessary for me to block the port holes as you suggest or can I just put it on there without going through all that.  I spoke to a couple of local guys and they said they never heard of such a thing. but I figured I better ask the the caddy guru first. and if so what should I tell the people and the machine shop what I want done. please read the post I posted before this one because that was the problem I was having all along with car shutting off. thanks for all your help

I did miss the Edelbrock  note in the message

You will need to pull the intake to block the heat tube ,for the stock  choke set up

It will still be your option to block the head heat passages and those  holes directly under the carb base gaskets with the Edelbrock or use the stock set up with the heat under the carb

That heat passage does help to warm the carb ,for a somewhat smoother cold temp start up

If you use the stock insulation plate under the Edelbrock ,you will now have two places to attach your PVC pipe to --Do block one of them off

If keeping you carb set up stock ,there is no need to close off the heat passages under the carb , as all stock car are set up and running that way from the factory

That is a hot rod trick to improve performance that some will choose to do or not do , makes the gas more dense a mixture , if the gas is  a cooler temperature

You do have to pull your intake manifold to accomplish that if you desire

You MUST use the correct gaskets and a carb spacer , in the correct order for the carb to be insulated from the heat that is generated ---by this design intake manifold

If the stock carb base gaskets ,were not used as they should be , that could be your engines shut down problem , as the carb gets to hot to perform as it should

If the correct carb gaskets are in place , the carb should be rebuilt

If you think the vacuum leak is not the carb ,plug all the vacuum lines at the back of the engine -except the brake booster , to isolate the engine from any cabin leaks there

The 64 has many places for vacuum leakes to show in the cabin

Do check your vacuum advance on the dist for air leaks -that could cause a vacuum leak,there

Be sure all carb connections and hoses  --are not leaking any air into the intake

Tell your "guys" from factory when car is cranked cold, heat riser is shut, and all fire hot exhaust gases go straight thru center channel of intake. If you are at least using s spacer/insulator you are probably going to be OK, other than perhaps bad performance, vapor locking of the carb.  If sitting flat on the intake with just a gasket you are getting exhaust hot gases flashing underneath the carb. This is why even 500 degree engine paint burns off that center port unless it is blocked.
