I have been about to pull my hair out with my 64 rear main seal leaking. I have had it replaced twice and to no avail it still is dripping. I have had to engine rebuilt twice and I have to believe that all parts were replaced when rebuilt but not totatlly 100% sure. My mechanic says that it could be the thrust bearing could possibly be bad cause he did say there was more than usual movement in the crank that he was use to seeing...could he be possibly right about that? I just don't want to go to that expense unless I am sure it will resolve it. I no you can make no guarantees, but with your experience with these year models, you might have some inside info that I am not aware of...

A special tool is described in the shop manual. It guides the upper rear main seal into place so the sealing surface does not get shaved off. Don't use it, and a leak is about guaranteed, as you know.
I don't see the crank moving back and forth as an issue, as the surface is the same.
i can feel your pain, brother,!!!! I'm in middle of replacing one now..

We just did a thread on the rear main seal leaking and Kim is in the process of putting the bottom of his engine black together after he replaced the rear main seal to see the results
Many have different degrees of a problem with the rear seal leaking in our year cars
It SB good reading just to learn more about the subject
The info is on the current Dashboard page
Enjoy

So my 63 guide matic headlamps stay on low beam all the time. I have so far bypassed the system and everything works normal. I have been thru the trouble shooting in the manual but this is where the confusion begins.on my car when the power relay is powered I have low beam and when its not powered I have highbeam, this appears to be opposite what the diagnosis says should be correct. The wiring is all original and no wires have been mixed up.has anyone ever unplugged the 2 wire connector…

Having tried both the II and III I can say the multispark feature of the III offers a smoother idle . It is also easier to install .Does not require removal of the distributor

I hope someone can help solve these two electrical problems that appeared one after the other.
By way of background: The car, a '64 Eldorado has very limited use. It was at a restoration shop for 15 months until last January- that supposedly did a bunch of wiring repairs including rebuilding the gas gauge that still hasn't worked properly, and the clock that hasn't worked, and re-soldering the broken wires in the drive door. All window and seat controls appear to be…
