Power WIndows Only Work Through Emergency Switch

My power windows have only worked while holding the emergency switch in the emergency position.  I am now hooking up and installing the reframed windows and would like to get them working properly.

The car is a 1964 convertible with power vent wings.

Any suggestions on how to trace and trouble shoot?

Thanks.

Jeff

Russ

Thanks. I will inspect all the parts and take pictures.

The power vent master window switches are rare, and hard to come by.  It would be quicker to have your housing rechromed. If the buttons are bad, I have good buttons.

Thank you for the input. I recently bought an automotive multi-meter from HF, which I will use to test for continuity in the wires.

Tomorrow it will be 70 degrees, dry and sunny and Saturday. Time to play with my favorite toy........

Thanks again. I will let you know what I find.

Tony, If all of his windows work in Emergency Position, to me that indicates the power to the cutout switch is good (red wire), and the back feed to other windows is good, and I would first check that white and black wire from cutout to master switch under the left arm rest switch panel. If that one wire is not making contact it will cause this issue. Wires do often break in the door boot but this points to something different... at least that is my first guess and what I would hone in on first.

Check the wiring in the drivers door jam ,for broken wires there
You will have to remove the rubber covering and inspect the wires for broken wires ,under the wires coating
Windows sb working when the ignition switch is in the on position
Emergency is used to power the windows ,when the car is off

Jason and Russ,
Thanks I'll test the wires this weekend.

Btw I'm looking for nice chrome window switch panels for convertible with power vents. Mine are pitted and would need replating.
Thanks.

Jeff, See shop manual Fig 16-114 at the cut-out switch. Since windows are working when you have the switch in Emergency position, that means you are at least getting power to the switch via the Red Wire (#1), and you are sending power via the yellow wire (#18) when in this position.

It sounds like when in the Normal position you are not getting power to the driver master switch via the white and black wire (#17). I would take a close look at that white and black wire between cut-out switch and the master driver switch and make sure wire is good and connectors are tight and using a multi-tester check for 12 volts at the master switch connector at the white and black wire terminal.

Based on what you have indicated this would be the first thing i would check for.

I would check the switch, and jump the wires to see if its a bad switch.  The 64 service manual will show the wires.

Starter Solenoid replacement-how difficult? Where to buy?

Posted by Norman Silverman on August 20, 2019 at 8:24pm 8 Comments

Hello All.

I believe the starter solenoid has gone bad in my 64 DeVille. When I turn the key, often all I get is a click, then if I try a few times again the starter turns perfectly. All battery cables are on tight and the battery is good. So, I believe this problem is the solenoid. Where do I buy the right solenoid and is it necessary to remove the starter in order to swap it out? …

Upper A Arm Rubber Bumpers

Posted by Gene McIlroy on August 12, 2019 at 1:30pm 3 Comments

I have found a very good replacement part for the Upper A Arm Bumpers.  The top part is identical to the originals the bottom can be used as is or after a few minutes with a belt sander can be ground to the V shape as the originals were.  The replacement bumpers are for a 2001 to 2005 S10 Sanoma or Blazer.  Part number is on the box in the photos.  First photo is the box next to the box is the S10 part and an original.  Next photo shows my sanded down part next to an original.…
