Touché you sent me to the dictionary as well and I thank you for schooling us in your native tongue.

i had never heard either expression but was able to locate the following explanation for “ugly as a smashed crab” in the Urban Dictionary:

a face so bad that if your dog had a face like a smashed crab, u'd shave its ass and teach it to walk backward“

Jay Leno has one of these, I forget which year exactly but from the '60s. He said in his Jay Leno Garage episode on the car that a lot of demolition derbies used to have a "No Chrysler Imperials" rule.

Apparently, even in the glory days of Detroit Iron these things were built that much stronger and heavier than everything else.

You are clearly the Poet Lauriate in these precincts. 

The Imperial probably had a leg up on the Cadillac in handling with its torsion bar front suspension, and in the ugly department. In fairness Cadillac used torsion bar springing on the first series FWD Eldorados.

A few years after leaving his job as President of Buick Division of GM, Walter P. Chrysler started Chrysler Coroporation out of the former Maxwell Company. Chrysler’s  early cars 1924-1932 introduced innovations such as hydraulic brakes and “floating” rubber engine mounts that became industry standards.

In 1964 Chrysler Imperial produced 23,200 cars.

Cadillac produced 165,909 cars. 

In those days Cadillac dominated the US luxury market. It was a symbol of prestige and success like no other American built car.

As a point of reference I had a ride in my friend’s mother’s 1962 Imperial in 1972. It was big- very wide, square steering wheel styling that was unique and had a firm but comfortable and quiet ride.

Hello All.

I will be replacing the starter solenoid tomorrow (actually my mechanic will do the work, I'll just supervise). In checking the FSM electrical schematic and chapter verbiage, I don't see anything that looks like (or is referred to as) a starter Relay. It seems the Starter Solenoid serves the function and there's no separate relay. Right or Wrong?

Hello All.

I believe the starter solenoid has gone bad in my 64 DeVille. When I turn the key, often all I get is a click, then if I try a few times again the starter turns perfectly. All battery cables are on tight and the battery is good. So, I believe this problem is the solenoid. Where do I buy the right solenoid and is it necessary to remove the starter in order to swap it out? …
