brake smell or axle grease smell (Rear) 63 cdv AND may have screws pooch!!

Thanks have been going fairly well.  over last week or so, i have noticed a bit of that axle grease smell when i come out of the door, not always, but sometimes.  today, i was out, and notice a pretty good shake at a higher speed.  car felt like it was being held back,, brakes seemed ok, no squatting, nothing out of normal feeling.

i got home, checked engine fluids, all ok,, looked behind wheels, didnt really notice any thing, brake lines were fine, no leaking.

i reached down an for whatever reason, felt the back driver hubcap and it was HOT!  i wen over to the passenger side and it was no where near as hot, I'm mean, it was burn your finger hot,, so i thought something was up, jacked it up, popped cap, started to pull lug bolts and twisted one by hand and almost drew a blister!!!  all of them were to hot to hold in your hand, only pinch an toss,,,

waited for stuff to cool,

Now, couple weeks back, i mentioned on one post, a dribble of something coming out of axle attached at brake,,but it was minor and one response seemed to discourage unless really got to leaking out and covering everything.. i did go head an order seals and bearings, so they are here,

ok, checked it out,, minor leak at bottom same as last time, gobs and gobs of breaks dust, i mean tons,  so I'm thinking shoes may have been tight,, however,, sometimes, i notice when at a light, car wants to roll some, sometimes it does not, i usually check that on flat surface, but just as more info.

well, i put car in neutral, loosened shoes a bit, put cover back on brake unit, i started to car to see how the brakes felt after loosening, seemed to be spinning, i knew i was in neutral,  tried to put in park,  got  a clicking sound,, but wouldnt fully engage into park,  so i am thinking, how could this prevent it from going into park??  well, i though maybe it was due to one wheel up, so i put the tire back on ,, tried to get in to park and it stops short of park, wont fully engage, but clicks, i can hear clicking,, i put it into drive enough to feel car engage, and stopped,, put into reverse to get back in its slot, engaged fine, no problem, but wont fully get into park,,,

SOOOOO,,, wtf,, have i potentially done here and is there a fix..

sincerely

Sounds like a leak into the brake drum area. I hope you have been checking the level of gear lube in the rear end, knowing there was a leak.  Possibly a hot bearing, or a rubbing shoe.

Not sure about the transmission problem.

Hi Tony,  yes, spring was changed.  the shoes are dry, just coated w dust.  The dribble is just that a dribble,

I read up on doing bearing and seal on you tube.  If i do the bearing, can i use the pipe trick to go over the axle and hit the pipe to set the bearing?  Should i just go head an doing the bearing as well, while the thing is apart?  Like i stated earlier,  90% of time,  it rolls off a flat stop.  Sometimes it doesnt, feels like the brake it partially on. Then goes, nxt stop, fine.

Russ, i will re ck that fluid level.

My real concern is the clicking and inability to get into park.

Yes, springs changed

i got to reading the manual,, regarding R&R of seal and bearing,  it noted a gasket that needed to be replaced and an o ring to be removed and discarded.  i ordered the gasket tonight, and   I wish i had checked this when i ordered the bearing and seal a month ago, but i dont see a O ring replacement, would any O ring due that fits the diameter,,??

have to say,, you tube makes these things look a lot easier than the manual in many cases, older models, like 60s cars are few and far between on u tube, but occasionally they stick a GM 60s something and I am assuming there is some similarity to cadillac, guess i will give it a go when the gasket comes in,, any suggestions would be appreciated

UPDATE, i took car for a short low speed ride around block,, car shifted as always, no problems noted in shifting or while driving.  So,  i decided to tackle the shift problem, as the manual and my other reading said could be a shift linkage thing.. and if it was an adjustment, shouldbnt be too hard to fix or adjust,,

got up under there, found the moving pieces, and gave them a shove to see what moves and doesnt. so i put it in reverse on the column, checked the position underneath,  i pushed it forward till i felt a click, figuring that was low, another click for second, and a third for drive.

next was neutral,, all went smooth and felt like the positions were distinct,, i pushed up to go to P and didnt want to go,,,so i gave it a pretty good shove, and it heard it click,, i looked on the column and it was in park!!!!  so i turned car on, ran through gears on column and it easily went into park,  SOOO,, i guest just go stuck when i was fooling with the rear axle and had it in a gear. I dont know, but,, it seems to be ok,, at least for now, hopefully just a one time glitch

i did check axle grease in the bulb.. Maybe a touch low, like a quarter inch,, so I'm going to go get some grease and top it off .  when parts come in, will try to redo the oil seal and reset brakes back there,,

any pitfalls and tips on that would be helpful if there are any.. especially,, DONT EVER DO info.. thats what gets me into trouble,, doing something you are NOT SUPPOSED to do.

Sincerely

I would fill with gear lube, as you never know at what point the bearings are going to be starved of lube.

If the leak gets worse, then it's time to park the car until the leak is fixed.  One thing to mention on removing the axles. NEVER beat on the hub to remove the axle. ALWAYS use an axle puller. You can rent one at most parts stores.  Beating on the hub may result in you having to order a straight axle from me, because you bent the axle.  (maybe you should beat on the axle)

I'm going to get the leak tended to when the remaining parts come in,, thanks for reminding me o not pound on the hub,, i saw some you tube that showed the axle puller in use, so i think i can get that done with no problems..

how bout the O ring, is that a generic part i can just pick up as long as it fits??

Back to brakes!!!!

well, in an attempt to find out the sputtering problem i took care out for an extended,, over 55 mph run, to see if i could duplicate the sputter.  i got out of town, on by pass, cruising about 55 -70 at about 12 miles,, started to get a light car vibration,, i had felt this before when i noted the rear brakes had gotten so hot a while back,  as i continued to the next turn out, noticed the vibration to be a bit more pronounced,  made the turn around, kept speed below 55 and pretty much got in ok, but when i hit brakes when i got to town, pretty hard shake on the car,, ,, as i got into much slower town traffic, the whole situation was non existent.

When i got home, as soon as i got out, i could smell the brake shoes on driver side rear.  This has not happened since i changed the axel, i think primarily, because i never get over about 45 or so, and if i do, its for no more than a mile...

i dont know what else to do regarding this,  i am guessing a trip to brake / alignment shop may be in order at this point,,something, at higher speed, is causing the brakes to either stick or something,  because the car becomes almost undrivalbe at a higher speed due to vibration,, not really a car shaking you out of seat, but a pretty steady vibration, that settles down at city driving speed,, i guess that is why i thought it was working ok, as i never got it up to a higher speed,, very disappointed, thought i had it fixed.

oh, the axle is not showing any sign of leak, which is good

May be the brake drum out of round.

how would i determine this,, take to a brake shop? or machine shop..

Ok.  Thanks.  Will search them out

I took drums to get turned, asked if thet could tell if warped or out of round.  Said they may b able to.  But noted the drums had weights on them,  Like tires.  I aked could they get out off balance and he said maybe,  because tgey hv weights, may hv been once before.  So i asked how would i ck that, he thought may coukd go to tire shop and maybe set up and turn like tire.  I then asked how woukd they weight as these things look welded on.  He wasnt sure exactly.

So, my question is coukd the drums be out of balance, especially if the are going to hv material removed.  Or woukd new drums b a better option,  not sure whuch way to go once new drums cut

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?

Vintage Air AC

Hey everyone, has anybody done a Vintage Air AC/Heat setup in their car? I want to bypass the old vacuum setup and go with a Vintage Air Gen 2 model. Before I get started, does anyone have any experience with this? (Which model to go with, do’s and dont’s, etc.) It looks pretty involved. Any and all info/pics would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Who rebuilds original AC  accumulator dryers for 1964 Cadillac? I have been on Classic auto air in Tampa FL wait list for over a year ,  There is one on Old air products web site that looks very similar to the original # 21-4214A but states it fits 1962 Gm cars, The one recommended for a 1964 Cadillac is half the length 21-4215A    What  is everyone using ? I would prefer to be as original as possible. Thanks

'63 Eldorado trumpet horn + 2 standard horns restoration

Posted by Les Eastling on November 15, 2023 at 10:34am 1 Comment

My son, unbeknownst to me, had all three of the horns on our 1963 Eldorado completely restored. We had recently added the Eldorado trumpet horn to the two standard horns and the sound was not very good... we had heard good ones so we knew something was not right... but there was not much we could do to get better sound from the 3 horns.

There is a restoration service called The Horn Works who my son…
