Ok,  short refresher,  last dec i relpaced starter w rebuilt from usa parts.  and even then,  after short runs where i got up to temp, if i shutvcar off, and then tried to start, it would drag heavily  a d would not start.  10 min later, it would start fine.   At the time,  i hv cleaned all grounds, all grounds properly,   i wrapped wires withe the heat tape, moved them back from exh manifold,  things seemed ok.

Last cupla weeks,  same symptom,  short rides around town, no problems, always starts, longer rides,  if i get gas,  car barely starts,  sometimes, it doesnt even click,  i can just hear a humm,  after a time or two. , it will slow turn, then start.

So i got bk under car, notced the black wire had a crack anf i coukd see copper.  As a temp fix, i put electric tape on it,  applied the heat tape,  took out for long ride tonight, 45 min or so at 70,  [no vibrations from rear, yeah!!]

Anyway, i got out, got in,   no start.

So what testing should i do now,   should i try to rewire from ignition key to solenpoid/starter,   replace solenoid,  what further test can i run that i didnt try in dec.    my limited knowledge says heat has something to do with this,  sustained heat, not just 2 minutes cross town, but longer rides.other than this recurring headache,  car doing good

Tony you ARE our resident cheerleader, all you need is a set of pompoms and a short skirt to complete the picture .

... and some nipple shields....

Jason, I will not ask if those are yours.

cold.  12.6 to 12.8.

Started,    was running at 14.67.

Took for 30 min ride, headlights on high,  turned off, took volage.  It was 12.4,    then i realiaed i had not shut off headlights, i then shut them off, and i got bk to 12.68, 69. So i am guessing alternator is functioning as it should?

However, the most encouraging part was after the ride,  i cranked car immediate after the battery test, and it fired right up,   none of the slow clunk clunk sound. Or clic click as i normally woukd get after that kind if ride,  so.  Im encouraged that maybe the battery was just not powerful enough.   Not gonna say cured, but encouraged,  need a good hour to see what happens

Kim, is this testing a new battery or the battery you had when this was posted September 9, 2018 at 9:26pm? I tried to go back thru the post to see where you had installed a newer higher CCA battery and do not see the posts.
I did find a post from yesterday where you stated "Napa shop here has a 850 cca that will fit my tray." So, did you buy it?  Did you install it? Is this what you are testing? Again, sorry if I missed the post where you had bought and installed a newer battery with more CCA.
For whatever battery you are testing the voltage specs are good.

Sounds like you are good to go.

Yep, and of course for sale. Actually have quite a few of them!

Yes, its the new battery i bought today,  9/21.   The 850 wouldnt fit tray. Had to get an 810 or 820.  The engine turnover was signifucantly more powerful after the 30 minute ride.  Usually , i get about 3 slow roll overs, and then a start,  this was quick and strong.

I'm just a guilty as the next guy, but this goes to show that checking the basics first will help in troubleshooting.

I always gravitate towards some obscure reason as to why something is not working, but checking the basics first help rule out a lot of wasted time and money.

Agree. Agree and Agree! And will even add to check the Easy Basics 1st. When you pop the hood the Battery (cranking) and alternator (charging the battery) are right in front of you when you pop the hood!

The problem for me though, is i bout a new battery less than year ago, based on asking parts store,  do you hv a battery for a 63 deville.   I assume its rated to what it needs, so y question.  Same as one of tge brake cylinders i bought,  new product, hours of chasing hot brakes, then find out, new cylinder was bad!  Lots of hours burned over new product.  While working the battery apparently isnt truly  a functional match,  but does fit the tray.  Maybe thats what they base, "it fits your car".  Anyway,  i am taking on a full on hour plus ride,  and once there, will see if it still turns over good.

Thanks for all the help!

I could go on and on about the quality of new parts being sold. For my kids 93 deville, a new radiator, ac compressor, distributor, fuel pump, and others all had to be replaced twice due to defective new parts.

Loud air moving sound within carb with cleaner removed

Posted by Dave Fehrle on March 23, 2024 at 3:23pm 8 Comments

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?

Vintage Air AC

Posted by Chase on March 21, 2024 at 5:55am 0 Comments

Hey everyone, has anybody done a Vintage Air AC/Heat setup in their car? I want to bypass the old vacuum setup and go with a Vintage Air Gen 2 model. Before I get started, does anyone have any experience with this? (Which model to go with, do’s and dont’s, etc.) It looks pretty involved. Any and all info/pics would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Who rebuilds original AC  accumulator dryers for 1964 Cadillac? I have been on Classic auto air in Tampa FL wait list for over a year ,  There is one on Old air products web site that looks very similar to the original # 21-4214A but states it fits 1962 Gm cars, The one recommended for a 1964 Cadillac is half the length 21-4215A    What  is everyone using ? I would prefer to be as original as possible. Thanks

'63 Eldorado trumpet horn + 2 standard horns restoration

Posted by Les Eastling on November 15, 2023 at 10:34am 1 Comment

My son, unbeknownst to me, had all three of the horns on our 1963 Eldorado completely restored. We had recently added the Eldorado trumpet horn to the two standard horns and the sound was not very good... we had heard good ones so we knew something was not right... but there was not much we could do to get better sound from the 3 horns.

There is a restoration service called The Horn Works who my son…
