Hi there fellas
not sure what happened to my last post...but looks like I have a leak near stem valve seals because car has been taking quite a bit of oil. I'm going to inspect it closer but meantime I wanted to ask you guys about those 'umbrella' seals. Can't find them anywhere that work with 390 engine.
They will normally come as part of a head gasket/top end kit.
It would seem to me, knackered stems seal will generally cause an engine to smoke on start up. Before you get too far into it, I would suggest doing some solid checks etc.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but make sure you're spot on before tearing the top end off.
Unless you're going to change them with the heads still on. That's a whole different procedure as well.
Check Fel-Pro SS 6418. Listings on Amazon and eBay show them fitting a '63 390.
I've done the compression test a couple of years ago and each cylinder was good but I'll do it again.
I think that one of those seals or orings dried out and causes the problem.
I'll investigate more :)
