I just got this 63 deville. It runs rough and clearly has

issues that need to be worked out. I have no idea where to start. I came here hoping you guys would be so kind as to walk me through trouble shooting the engine.

it takes a lot to get it started once it’s running it burns oil and if you don’t keep gassing it she stalls. It does drive but second gear is a hard shift so that probably needs work too.

You will cause heat damage to your starter ( burn it up ) and battery if you hang on the key the way you are 

Let the starter cool after trying to start 15-20 sec 

Do a very complete Tune Up —including the ignition wires if you do not know the engines maintenance  history 

Fresh points and setting the timing should show a big improvement in starting and running

Can you install new points and do the timing for starters ?
Pls get yourself a 63 Service Manual for your year Cadillac as it will be the answer to correctly doing your  maintenance on your Cadillac as required by Cadillac

Some basics could be checked first:

- measure compression in each cylinder

- is there spark in each cylinder when it runs

- choke seems to be not working at all

- carb adjustment and ignition timing

It is not 63 engine but older.

Real good observation 

The location of the fuel pump on top of the engine is a sign that this  is an earlier engine than 1962 from what I think I know 
I had a 62 convert so know the 62 63 ( 390’s ) and 64 ( 429 ) engines have the fuel pump on the lower front drivers side of the engine 

So this engine is earlier than those 

Possibly a 58 to 61 engine ——but just my best guess

Oil pump

I removed the front cover to change out the timing chain & gears all that went pretty well when I put the cover back on I put in a fresh oil filter ,filled it up figured it would be enough to prime the oil pump when I started the car .Fired up the car and heard lifters rattling, So I shut the car down right away. motor guy lost my block (machine shop went under) so I’m replacing motor & tranny with LS conversion. I have motor parts (other than block) for 429, rebuilt transmission, converter, and too many other motor parts not needed with fully dressed LS going in.

Trunk Open and Lock Mechanism is in Closed Position

While working on my trunk lock on 64 Cadillac, I mistakenly closed the locking mechanism while the trunk was open.  Is there an easy way to manually release the lock back to the open position?

Fuel Pump Failure

Hello,

I'm located in Melbourne, Australia and my 64 sedan de ville is stuck in the garage due to failed mechanical fuel pump. The first after market mechanical fuel pump lasted a few years before it failed & left me stranded 5 hours from home. A hire car and tow got us home.
