Hello together,

as I mentioned in my previous post, my newest purchase -a 63 Fleetwood 60 Special- had some bad engine knocking when accelerating and I tried to figure out, whats the problem.

I was afraid that it were the Hydros. The engine has got run only 52.000miles.

Last weekend, I did an oil change : old oil was a 4 year old 20W50 so I filled in fresh  LiquiMoly 10W40 MoS2

I don´t know if this oil is available in the states, but this german oil brand uses a molybdenum sulfite lubricant with a zink content of >1.200ppm which makes the ZDDP unnecessary.

I also added a Hydro-Additiv and : WOW ... all the eninge knocking is away. It runs soooo smooth now *love*

After 200 miles of testdrives there are no leaks, yet so I hope all the seals still work with this thinner oil.

Good to know, glad you solved the problem.

That is fantastic. Might be good idea to run some engine flush thru on next oil change. Sounds like you may have had some built up sludge and blocked channels. Completely up to you, but you might consider another complete oil and filter change, with engine flush with the process, after a few hundred miles. I know I have brought some old cars back to life in this manner in the past.

yes that´s my plan ;-) I will drive it a few hundred miles and then again do an oil change with the same LiquiMoly 10W40 + hydro additive.

Somehow I am thinking what you are calling an engine knock is your valve lifters making a good deal of engine noise

 Is  that what you meant by Hydros ?( they are little hydraulic pumps ) 

There is no oil change that will cure a true engine knock which is a damaged piston issue  but the valve lifters can always be flushed and that would clean them up and get them working as they should again if they are gummed up from a period of non use

The oil you are using is a good chemistry for your flat tappet cam engine and a good choice

These cars call for a 10w - 30 motor oil  from the factory so the oil you are using is thicker than the factory calls for if using  10w -40 motor oil but will be no issue ( just for your own info ) so the oil is not thinner than required but a good deal thinner than the oil that first came out of that engine 

Mostly it is  really great that you got the engine to run smooth and you can now enjoy the car

Just saw that you are in Germany which makes for the different terminology that we use in communicating auto things which is understandable for sure 

The owners of these year  Cadillacs  outside the USA has to be even more an intense experience due simply for the rarity of observers  ever seeing one on the road and there reaction because of that 

My 64 convert cause a commotion  where ever I take it in the USA so I cannot imagine the commotion your car causes in Germany

Hello Tony, please excuse my wrong terminology ;-)

what I first called "engine knocking" was actually a bad noise from the lifters that came especially when accelerating. But this sound has now completely disappeared.

I have got the ´63 shop manual  and I´m total excited about it. It was already very helpful.

As long as I can remember I´m a petrolhead and in love with US cars... I bought my first one (2011 Suburban LT) in Houston, TX an shipped it to Germany. Later I added a 1980 C10 Stepside to our private collection and every time, my wife and I drive this cars here in Germany, the observers are very enthusiastic.

But driving this 63 beauty here is like people think they see a white unicorn :-) It is priceless to look into these faces.

As the car is  brand new to you you have a good number of years ahead of you to be observing the people’s reaction to these amazing American General Motors machines of the early 60’s 

Some of the very best  collectible cars that have  come from General Motors were built in the 60’s as it was one of the more affluent times in the USA and it show in the quality of materials that went into these cars 

These cars are very special 56 years after they came off the showroom floor and that is an amazing thing to experience and keep experiencing if you own one 

This is one of the best places on earth to be  if you own one of our year Cadillacs so looking forward to interacting with you  here in the future

Torque converter grab when idling in Drive

Hi Everyone, been quite a while since i have been on here.

I have had an issue with the idle on my 64 Coupe Deville ever since i have had it.

With the Idle set high enough that it is smooth, but still a nice idle, the RPM seems only slightly too high for the stall of the Torque Converter. And therefore it tends to sit there and grab and lunge a bit. So until now, i have been putting the car in Neutral at the lights to stop this happening.

Newbie to the group here - we have already found tons of invaluable information on the board, so thanks! We are restoring a 1963 Series 62 Convertible. We are wondering if anyone knows of a source to buy the propellor yoke flange (that bolts to the pinion flange) for the driveshaft? One of our ears partially broke off.
