A word of caution about using Stock Interiors/Auto Custom Carpets

Hi Folks,

 

Just a word of warning here. Take it or leave it...

 

I purchased almost $1,000 worth of carpets, custom mats, and bulk carpet from Stock Interiors over the past year for my 1963 Cadillac.

 

The molded carpets from Auto Custom Carpets aren't the best fit to put it mildly. But the biggest issue is that I ran out of carpet while doing my door cards and needed one additional yard of carpet. They wouldn't sell it to me, so now I have a 95% finished interior!

 

I contacted Auto Custom Carpets directly and they also said "too bad". So you might want to avoid Stock Interiors/Auto Custom Carpets at all costs. Otherwise you may end up in my situation where I either rip out my entire interior and start again, or try to patch together a few scrap pieces of carpet to finish my car.

 

Talk about poor customer service...

That is a shame. My advice for anyone replacing the interior is to generously over-order materials. I needed a little extra fabric when I did mine. SMS had no problem selling me more but they were out of it. I think it took about a year for them to fire up the loom and make more. Also there is no guarantee that product from different lots will be exactly the same color. 

Did ACC give you a reason for not selling you more carpet? Is there a minimum order required? I would think red carpet is not that uncommon to have in stock. 

By the way, your interior looks great. Keep up the good work.

The problem is that Stock Interiors/ACC will only sell a maximum of one yard of material and ONLY if you purchase a molded carpet set. So I didn't have any choice unless I wanted to buy another molded carpet, which I don't need.

sucks that you used them, but all is not lost.   
Really every carpet maker is using the same carpet.   you have some options left to find yardage.
First, google Dorsett loop carpet, and see if any vendors will sell yardage,  get a sample first, the color code you should look for is going to be on your invoice, ACC uses the Dorsett colors, i'd figure.
Second, make a friend with a local upholstery guy, they could get it for you from a jobber.  My jobber used to get a roll of all the colors to add to orders for just this reason to have it in stock.
Third, check with the local auto stereo installer.  they wrap the subs in carpet when they install them in the trunk, and a bright red may be in stock or they can get it.

Thank you Mark. Those are great suggestions.

I have looked at Dorsett and they don't use the same color code at ACC but I will be calling them to get a sample.

I live in a fairly small community and the only auto upholsterer I know of is not easy to get hold of. But I'm going to try that route if the Dorsett doesn't work out.

I'll also try the stereo installer route.
