hey guys, have any of you run and aftermarket airconditioning in their 63/64? i currently am im the process of restoring a 63 coupe deville with a ls swap and would like to remove the factory air conditioning and install a aftermarket ac. or if possible fix the ac system that is in the car now and retro fit it to run with the ls engine. does anyone have any tips/ experience with this?

Here is my long and weary experience with AC.

I restored my 1960 Eldo Seville with 100% factory air and R12. It blows cold enough for sticky humid VA. But when its over 90, forget it. Open the windows at 70 mph. Wear polka dot swim trunks and sandals.

Aftermarket AC is cheap and wimpy with R134. Ohhh yes it is! People who say its great don't live in humid climes like the south, they live in the dry west. Aftermarket stuff is comprised of the cheapest components they can sell in a kit. Complaints are handled by reps that say "You must not have installed it correctly." Bullshit excuse.

People forget that modern glass and insulation make AC a (cold) snap in modern cars. Not so for old ones. All that glass equals heat. Midday driving is an issue with summer sun.

Im restoring my big interior 63 vista wagon. I want to hang meat to dry age in there, so Im using mylar insulation. We are putting in a 7-vane HD compressor and front and rear evaporator / fan units. Denso has good products. Buy heavy duty everything. Good clamps & hoses too. A 125 amp alternator is a good thing.

An electric fan on the front condenser is also a necessity.


maybe i should consider fixing the factory air conditioning and some how retro a ac compressor off of a newer chevy motor. wonder how hard this will be. hmmm  decisions decisions

The factory fan does not blow your hair back like the new cars. It cools the interior, but you can not compare it to the newer cars. 

The 63 system is basically simple. 2 vacuum motors for the doors, a few switches in the AC control head and the vacuum lines. You may like it. 

i replaced my compresser, the little tube that looks like a water bottle up near the front, and some of the plumbing that was suplied by old air in texas,,,,some one else on here did same..mine came out ok.. then, i decided to re build the engine...and havent put it back in yet.. you have to take out the parts up under the passenger corner hood. remove some of those littel copper wires., do some very minor electrical connections,, ( when i say minor, its very basic casue i dont know squat about electircal)  the guys at old air were helpful when i had questions...you will need to remove the mudflaps over the front passenger tire,,,

i bought the efficency compressor from them, and the other swap hardware.  cost was about 600 or so all said an done,

Rumble Sound at 55-60 mph

64 Coupe DeVille , while driving at 55-60 mph I have a oscillating rumble sound . Steering wheel does not shake or vibrate . Transmission mount looks good .Tires were replaced 2 years ago balanced and rebalanced recently. Axel bearings were just replaced, rear differential assembly was just replaced with a Posi track ,pinion bearings good. Fresh gear lube. Driveshaft checked and balanced the other day ,new center bearing installed and new bearing carrier assembly too. Trying to figure this…

Hello I've been restoring a 63 for way to many years. Down to almost done, but have issue with trans linkage, when column in park shift rod 2 inches short. everything original. been trying to find picture of manual rod hooked up from under car to see position of linkage. was wondering if anybody has access for pictures. I wanted to see if my manual linkage is bent  wrong out of the trans if somebody dropped the trans or something. Doesn't make sense why it doesn't work. Thanks for any input…

Torque converter grab when idling in Drive

Hi Everyone, been quite a while since i have been on here.

I have had an issue with the idle on my 64 Coupe Deville ever since i have had it.

With the Idle set high enough that it is smooth, but still a nice idle, the RPM seems only slightly too high for the stall of the Torque Converter. And therefore it tends to sit there and grab and lunge a bit. So until now, i have been putting the car in Neutral at the lights to stop this happening.
