I am the Rochester guy but going to be installing Carter in my buddys Caddy… and have a question regarding the steel shim…
Should I apply the gas resistant sealant or another gasket instead???
I use gasket sealant #2
Just use all the recommended gaskets under the Carter carb ——no sealant needed
The aluminum gasket is required with the stock Carter for the engine to run correctly —- covers an air hole of some kind in the bottom of that carb
You must use sealant, otherwise you will have a vacuum leak. Even the shop manual mentions using a cement. Todays sealants are much better than the older stuff.
I can only say that I have never used a sealant myself on my stock Carter carb base gaskets with no vacuum leaking issues
I do now have an Edelbrock 1406 but the base gaskets are still the same as those used for the stock Carter in my case
That is why I responded as I did
