HI all,

I have finally started the project of restoring my '63 Coupe. Problem is I inherited a few headaches and little actual info. The previous owner(s) have left the car in various states of disassembly. I didn't even get a set of keys with it. That leads me to my question.

It appears as if the trunk is FULL of various parts I looked after taking the back seat out). Problem is that I can't get into it! As mentioned there were no keys. I popped one of the door locks off and had a key made for it. Unfortunately this key only works in both doors and ignition. I always assumed that this car would be like every other GM I've owned in where the doors and trunk were keyed alike and the ignition was it's own key. I guessed wrong it seems. What am I going to need to do to pop the trunk? Is the trunk key the same as the glove box key? I've tried pumping a blast of air into the vac line for the trunk but only get a slight hiss coming from the trunk area. It's imperative that I get into that trunk to take stock of whatever parts may be in there. I'd hate to buy up a bunch of stuff only to find out they were in the trunk all along. Advise me please.

Minor update: The glove box is keyed the same as the doors and ignition. I would assume that the trunk is as well but the key refuses to budge the lock. I have jiggled and wiggled it six ways from Sunday and no dice. Short of calling in a locksmith (which I loathe to do) I'm out of ideas.

The door and ignition are the same key. the glove box and trunk are the same key. Since you have the power trunk, put vacuum to the line going to the trunk. Hopefully you get lucky with that.

If not, take the glove box lock out.  The lock has no numbers stamped on it, but a lock smith can easily look at it and tell what the code is.   Hold the chrome bezel still, and move the glove box lock assembly back and forth. that should loosen up the bezel. It just unscrews and the lock will fall out.

Or take a 7/16 socket and get it to the 3 bolts that hold the trunk latch in the deck lid.  The deck lid would then lift up.

How do our car locks get so screwed up!! My door and trunk is the same key and the ignition key is different. I've never tried the glove box yet but I am going to now.
If you attach a hand vacuum pump to the trunk power release that might work.

I eventually got the trunk to open. It took a lot of patience and jiggling of the key to get it there though. It seems as if the tumbler for the trunk is worn. I'll have to take it to the locksmith and get them to repair it. Unfortunately the vacuum trick didn't work this time but I got it to open eventually. Patience is a virtue.

It seems that at some point someone had all the locks and ignition keyed the same. I'm okay with that but I still prefer the "old school" way of having the ignition and doors keyed differently.

Greg my door locks didn't work when I first got my car. When I realized what was going on I sprayed wd40 in them and now they work perfectly. I originally thought I had no door keys.

This thread reminds me of the most overlooked piece of literature most of us have ... our owners  manual.  Page 4 is all about the two separate keys provided - octagonal head for ignition and door locks; rounded head for luggage compartment and glove box. Read that owners manual and you will be surprised at the wealth of information. If anyone needs one I have a very good 1964 manual from last parts car for $25 + s/h.

The ignition key can be removed while the car is running ,which is different to me ,from other cars
Helps if you need to get to the trunk key
Do not lock your keys in the trunk ,by accident
That is what a Hide a Key is for
I find a Hide a key to be a very good idea ,when it is needed
I have been using them for about 50 years on all my cars
It can truly rescue you when needed

That just means that the key is worn. The key should not be able to be removed when the switch is turned on.

Russ is correct. I've had a few driver and parts cars where the key would remove when switched on, but that is from a worn key and/or lock.

Still using the original keys ,so a lot of room for wear over 52 years
Interesting to learn ,wear is responsible for the convienence it affords

I hope someone can help solve these two electrical problems that appeared one after the other.

can anyone help me with a driveshaft ? I have a 1963 Cadillac 62 series 4dr with the hydro-matic trans. I need the male splined shaft on the front of the rear driveshaft section. the piece with the nut attached by clip.id be willing to buy a shaft if its not horribly priced.

Dash removal

Hello everyone,

On a 63 CDV, if a guy wanted to remove the entire dash to get all the metal painted, and do some other things behind there, how would he go about doing that?  I checked here and the shop manual, but can't find a complete guide.
