Hi guys, has anybody experiences in installing an engine oil cooler? Since I've mounted a hitch (see pics) for towing my caravan the engine is getting hotter than normally - the temp display needle is in the middle and sometimes even a little more. I've already installed an additional electrical fan in front of the radiator. I know that I need a "sandwich" plate between the oil filter and the bracket, hoses and a radiator. But does this really work and help bringing the engine temp down ? Thank you, Robert

Robert, Does your 64 Sedan have AC. If not it did  not come with a fan shroud. Many non-AC car owners have installed the fan shroud to increase cooling capacity. Also do you have the hood to radiator shroud (masticated rubber attached with metal strip to underside of hood), and the lower radiator air deflector (metal pan) installed. Both, help direct air through the radiator and if missing can affect cooling capacity.
Also, be sure to flush out your cooling system a couple of times and replace radiator if needed. There are extra heavy duty 4 row option replacements available. You still might need extra cooling capacity pulling the caravan but these items may help. Perhaps, there are others that pull a camper such as yours that can chime in on what they have done to address engine cooling issues.

I would be more concerned with the temp of the transmission fluid. Heat kills quickly in a tranny.

On a side note; A picture of your rig all set up would make a great picture for the 2019 Cadillac calendar.

That appears to be a hidden hitch? Very nice job, i was going to do the same with my car but ive got a couple other cars to tow with if I feel the need to vacation. 

Derale cooling products have a very nice transmission cooler with an electric fan on it. They vary in price from 200 and up Canadian. I got mine from Amazon and it's an excellent unit. As Russ pointed out it probably is the transmission that's heating the engine. The transmission cooler in the radiator will heat up the engine coolant transferring the heat to the engine. It doesnt sound like its over heating horribly, the only way to be sure is to install an actual temp gauge. Make sure you are is g a good quality oil high in Zink for the flat tappet cam. Amsoil male an excellent oil called z rod. I use 3 quarts 30 weight and top off with the 50. They don't make it in 40 weight. The best spot to add the electric trans cooler is down under the car I  good air flow. I put mine on the removable drivers side inner fender. Very easy to remove the panel and service it. I also have derale rad fans and shroud and all three fans are controlled by their pulse width modulator fan controller. The car runs to cool now lol. 

Your water pump will have  a big effect on cooling, is it new?

I second Russ's need for a tranny cooler
It is often suggested to use a tranny cooler when towing --most anything
Do all of what --is necessary -to keep your drive train at the correct temps

You SB running about 200-220 degrees at the half way mark on the temp guage ( about )

Which is highish and not terrible but it would be better to lower that temp for long term use to protect the drivetrain from oil break down due to excessive heat that then damages metal parts
Fresh trans fluid would be a good idea if its condition is unknown and a trip is in the future
Do what is required to keep the drivetrain protected to help extend the joy of the car and vacation
You will be happy you did

Meanwhile, I've done a lot of things: fixing (bridging) the not correct working fan clutch, changing the radiator, adding a tranny cooler (no line through the radiator), additional electrical fan with a relay/switch, new (aluminium) lines and hoses with a temperature sensor/sending unit for the tranny and even more...everything works great and is so "cool". Jason, the hood to radiator shroud is there and I flushed the system several times. The hidden hitch is from a BMW E60/61 - the only one, that fits around the fuel hose and is heavy duty up to 1900 KG. With some modifications and putting in air shocks it's perfect. I am working at a BMW dealer and they give me everything I need. My next project is the cruise control. I've only got the main (working) unit for 30 bucks. I've tested it and it works fine. But I need (at least) the 2 cables. I think, they are special and that I cannot use my existing speedometer cable as the lower one. But maybe you can help me?!

Hi guys, although none of you notices my post/comment or me, I'm telling you about my experiences on driving my car (with the caravan) on the highway through the mountains for about 200 miles at this very hot (86 degrees) weekend in Germany: water temp shows max 167, and transmission oil temp max 180 degrees. I think, that all my work was successful. What do you think?

Sounds like you have addressed any overheating issues.  Those are nice relatively cool temps!

ps. I drove my 64 Coupe de Ville 172 miles Friday from Raleigh to Charlotte, North Carolina with the speed around 75 mph and temps in mid 80's and it pegged just over the 1/4 mark.. which is about par for the course:

Hello I've been restoring a 63 for way to many years. Down to almost done, but have issue with trans linkage, when column in park shift rod 2 inches short. everything original. been trying to find picture of manual rod hooked up from under car to see position of linkage. was wondering if anybody has access for pictures. Torque converter grab when idling in Drive

Hi Everyone, been quite a while since i have been on here.

I have had an issue with the idle on my 64 Coupe Deville ever since i have had it.

With the Idle set high enough that it is smooth, but still a nice idle, the RPM seems only slightly too high for the stall of the Torque Converter. And therefore it tends to sit there and grab and lunge a bit. So until now, i have been putting the car in Neutral at the lights to stop this happening.

Hello!

Newbie to the group here - we have already found tons of invaluable information on the board, so thanks! We are restoring a 1963 Series 62 Convertible. We are wondering if anyone knows of a source to buy the propellor yoke flange (that bolts to the pinion flange) for the driveshaft? One of our ears partially broke off. Not sure if we can buy just the yoke flange as an aftermarket part, or if it has to be rebuilt by a welder/fab guy? Maybe a salvage yard for a source? Again, any…
