Trying to pull 1963 390 harmonic balancer. The holes needed for the 3 bolts on the puller can only thread in 1/4” which is not enough to run an impact wrench on it. I ran a tap to clean the threads out but seems to have hit rubber. One hole does go very deep but the other 5 are too shallow. Thought about drilling out the rubber then clean threads with the tap and then tap deeper. Does this ruin the balancer if I drill out the rubber to the same depth.? Is there another remedy I’m not thinking of?
I do know you can damage the balancer if you encounter the rubber in the balancer and make holes in the rubber of the balancer
I do not have an answer regarding the depth issues you are having with the puller myself
The boys who are better to advise you on this matter will be along shortly and I would wait for their response before going forward as it is possible to create a problem with the balancer
Pulled many of these balancer's with the shallow holes. If you run the bolt into the rubber, you will push the rubber ring loose from the rivets. I do not recommend drilling any material out. You will probably ruin the balancer.
I just use a wrench on my balancer removal tool and have never had a problem.
Thank you for the encouragement. It all came out fine with the shallow holes. I'm simply cautious because of experience elsewhere.
