today was a black saturday: my 1964 Caddy "baby" only drives in the first gear and reverse. so I drained the oil (6 liters - not drained the converter) , pulled off the pan and the filter. just dirt in the pan - no major "material". but the (I think it is) the band is loose and the pipe for the filter also. is this normal? and what about the missing second, third and fourth gears? any ideas? Russ, have a look at the video on youtube, it's very clearly a hydramatic.  You can see the band from the bottom which, on a th400, you'd see the valve body only, and also you can see in the vid that it has a square pan, a separate filter pipe, and up inside when he's playing with the band, you can see in the case the steel plate on the back of the shift valve body, which is hydramatic only.  Turbo hydramatic trannies have a one piece aluminum valve body.  Also, you see the throttle rod in the shot on the linkage.

If the trans is two quarts down these trans do not shift as they should

Thought it odd that the trans was full and you added fluid and improved a problem

Are you checking the fluid level with the car at operating temp and running at an idle as you SB ?

Enjoy

Hi Tony, I've checked the fluid level at operating temp and running at idle. Although it was good, it helped me out 2 times by adding nearly 1 quart. Or maybe it was something else....who knows?

Look at the dip stick, It should say hydromatic on the metal extension.

From his profile; so its a Hydra-Matic.

Hi guys. Tomorrow I am going to check the governor. In case this thing is in no good condition: does anybody has one? Price and shipping to Germany please. Thanks, Rob

I've fixed the problem: the 2 valves stuck in the governor. Disassembled, cleaning and finally assembled. That's all!

Sweet, now get out there and drive it before the snow starts to fly.

Nice work

Little better than fixing your own needed repairs especially when little expense is the result

Have Fun getting the car back on the road

Enjoy
