Got block back. Cleaned , blew out.  Got bearing placement sorted out.  Bearings in manual dnt match new bearings..  different grooves on one or two.

When i took block to be worked. I had removed the caps and left them in order and facing directions as to which way the numbers pointed as they came off, and advised shop of that for reinstall.

When i got it back, they had the caps on, in order, and aligned in a directional fashion but my new now fearful nature of the meticulous order of things here, and the book doesnt point out, so i am here again to verify.

There are notches that align the bearings as they fit it in the cap n block.  If ypu put them in as the mill shop put the cap,  you hv a configuration as ypu see in attached photo.  Upper and lower cap notch are side by side.   If ypu flip the cap, ypu will hv one notch per side of the cap.    SO,, the question is.,,

Which is correct,,tches side by side,   or one notch on each side

Back to this situation.

I removed and reset the caps to hv a bearing gap or notch on each side of shaft as suggested.  Thats 5 notch openings on one sode of shaft [right] and 5 on other side [left].   Put together, used the plastigage, looked tite, but even more concerning, shaft woukd not turn,   so i unscrewed the bolts holing it down, tried to turn,  nothing, would not move.  Per a suggestion, mesure, id and od of shaft and besring.  3.0 across bd on shaft 2.99 on bearing. ..

So i went bk to my block that was orig in the car,  looked again at notch configuration.  It had all notches on one side.

So, i decided to see if that made any differebce on new block,   chged them to all notches on one side. Tightend, and it spins as you would expect, plastigage looked w in range in book.

Having learned just because it fits, doesnt mean wear it.   I am back again to confirm the orientation.  In one direction. Numbers all in same orientation, i get no spin, tite plstigage,   other condition.  Numbers in same orientation, just flipped and in order,  i get plastigage in range and a spinning shaft.

Please help me w this delimma. I dnt know how to proceed from here

Well, thanks all,  i ll re ck and proceed,  i was dreading hvn to haul that thing back to mill.

I got pistons together, had to do very little grinding to meet gaps.  Lot of details to pay attention there, land gaps, oil ring opening had to point up,  no gaps overlapping,,on n on.   But making progress

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?

Vintage Air AC

Posted by Chase on March 21, 2024 at 5:55am 0 Comments

Hey everyone, has anybody done a Vintage Air AC/Heat setup in their car? I want to bypass the old vacuum setup and go with a Vintage Air Gen 2 model. Before I get started, does anyone have any experience with this? (Which model to go with, do’s and dont’s, etc.) It looks pretty involved. Any and all info/pics would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Who rebuilds original AC  accumulator dryers for 1964 Cadillac? I have been on Classic auto air in Tampa FL wait list for over a year ,  There is one on Old air products web site that looks very similar to the original # 21-4214A but states it fits 1962 Gm cars, The one recommended for a 1964 Cadillac is half the length 21-4215A    What  is everyone using ? I would prefer to be as original as possible. Thanks

'63 Eldorado trumpet horn + 2 standard horns restoration

Posted by Les Eastling on November 15, 2023 at 10:34am 1 Comment

My son, unbeknownst to me, had all three of the horns on our 1963 Eldorado completely restored. We had recently added the Eldorado trumpet horn to the two standard horns and the sound was not very good... we had heard good ones so we knew something was not right... but there was not much we could do to get better sound from the 3 horns.

There is a restoration service called The Horn Works who my son…
