Hey everyone,  how sensitive should the power brakes be?  I have just rebuilt the power booster and  replaced the master cylinder. The pedal doesn’t have any resistance so I have to be very gentle so they don’t throw me through the windshield.   I’ve tried using them without the booster and they aren’t as aggressive so I’m thinking it’s not the shoes, I’ve adjusted and readjusted the booster’s pushrod with a gauge to no avail.   Is it possible for the brake booster spring to wear out?   I’ve replaced shoes, wheel cylinders, flexible brake lines, turned drums, master cylinder, and rebuilt booster.   Any advice would be appreciated,

I do think you are on the correct path to be getting the brake shoe issue corrected  now as the new brake shoes ordered sound like the right ones indicating there exceptional brake shoe friction material

Had no idea the company changed hands so thanks for that info 

The last set of shoes you purchased sounds like a new addition to there line and the name just does not sit well with me at all ( sounds like a veggie ham burger to me —LOL ! ) 

Raybestos is the only company I know of that cuts the brake shoes to the shape of the brake drums —-as ALL the auto parts store did —-for you as a service —back in the day ( love saying that ) 

All auto parts suppliers —had machine shops in the back years ago when these cars were new 

The 12 inch drums on our year Cadillacs are about as large as a drum gets on any car which is why some replacement brake shoes do not hold up to the heat that is produced by them and cause the aggravation you are experiencing as happened to me as well 

A hell of a lot of work you have done between the brake booster and changing brake shoes 3 times but getting the car road worth will pay for itself in the fun  and joy these cars are to be out and about in 

In my own opinion there is no need for disc brakes on our year cars —- when the stock brakes are working as they should as I NEVER had the brakes fad on me in 57 years and the car stops on a dime —as they say 


We’ll see how they go,  I’ll keep you updated.  I agree with you on the veggie hamburger, I’ve always viewed the word “organic” as being synonymous with “not that great”, like it’s  a way for companies to make you feel good about buying a subpar product.
  I don’t plan on going the disc route,  to me it seems like a large expense without much to gain.   

After driving the car around town,  The brakes seem to have settled in and are working excellent, it’s nice to finally have the car stopping properly.  I decided against  swapping out the shoes again.   Thanks for all your help.

Looks like the length of the brake booster arm plunger was your issue that corrected your stopping problem

Yeah,  That pushrod is very sensitive to adjustment , I ended up just tightening and loosing it back and forth till finally they felt normal. Even a small difference of 1/8 of a turn was enough to make the difference of not stopping and throwing you through the windshield. Oddly the longer the pushrod the less sensitive they got.  The pushrod gauge was pretty much useless.    


Glad you posted the additional info regarding the sensitivity of the booster rod adjustment which is very helpful for the community to be aware of when making a brake booster replacement

Hello I've been restoring a 63 for way to many years. Down to almost done, but have issue with trans linkage, when column in park shift rod 2 inches short. everything original. been trying to find picture of manual rod hooked up from under car to see position of linkage. was wondering if anybody has access for pictures. Torque converter grab when idling in Drive

Hi Everyone, been quite a while since i have been on here.

I have had an issue with the idle on my 64 Coupe Deville ever since i have had it.

With the Idle set high enough that it is smooth, but still a nice idle, the RPM seems only slightly too high for the stall of the Torque Converter. And therefore it tends to sit there and grab and lunge a bit. So until now, i have been putting the car in Neutral at the lights to stop this happening.

Newbie to the group here - we have already found tons of invaluable information on the board, so thanks! We are restoring a 1963 Series 62 Convertible. We are wondering if anyone knows of a source to buy the propellor yoke flange (that bolts to the pinion flange) for the driveshaft? One of our ears partially broke off. Not sure if we can buy just the yoke flange as an aftermarket part, or if it has to be rebuilt by a welder/fab guy? Maybe a salvage yard for a source? Again, any…
