<p>On the non tilt columns, looking at your shop manual illustration, shift lever connects to shifter tube that connects to the shifter lever. It is a direct connection and all rotate together and I have outlined in yellow in illustration.</p>
<p>The carrier is pressed onto the shifter tube, onto a keyed area that keeps the carrier locked in place. It sounds like you carrier was not pressed onto the shifter tube all the way or has worked it self up and off the tube over the years. See the keyed…</p>
