any ideas how to clear the ugly black stuff shooting out from my tailpipe? After a long layover, it really messes up the garage floor. I assume its carbon but am not sure how best to react to it. Thanks in advance

Car is running rich. But......carbureted cars are very hard to tune so the black soot doesn't accumulate and spew out on warm ups.  You will need a dyno and a lot of time with an expert in carburetors to tune the carb.

It sounds like your choke is not set right. Check the shop manual for adjustments to it. It's not overly complicated.

Because of our really warm climate, I wound my choke off.

It would drop a bit of sooty crap on the concrete..... doesn't now. :-)

I find, with one decent pump of the go peddle, then foot off the throttle, it just starts and idles. I leave the A/C off until I've backed it out of the shed, but by then, air on and idles like a champ.

Hmmm..... fuel injection doesn't have that problem ; )

How would you know Magoo.... you only started yours the other day, the first time in 12 months... hmmm.... hmmmmm .... hmmmmmm. LOL

I waited 12 months to start it as a test. I wanted to see how hard it was to start after 12 months of sitting. It went perfectly and started on first bump of the key AND no black smoke bahahaha!!!!

Belated Thank You!! I am anxious to get back at it soon. Had to move it the other day and it sounds like I've left her alone too long. It is a pretty good starter also. Better than my newer truck and car.

I would do a very complete tune up then adjust the carb on a Dwell Meter ( on the --expanded RPM part of that meter ) if tune was not done in a reasonable interval
Adjusting the choke if that mechanism is working correctly
The engine needs to be serviced ever 6,000 miles ( if points ) per the manual
If pertronics a new cap and rotor Is needed
The condition of the carb could be part of the problem and may require a rebuild but that can only be determined after the above tune is completed
Do replace the ignition wires if you cannot remember when done last
That will always make the car a pleasure to drive again --unless there are other undelying issues that show themselves as you work on getting the engine to run on its correct specs

Enjoy

A large piece of carboard will solve any issues with messing up the floor from exhaust

I only get some white water vapor from condensation when i start the 64 after it sits for periods of time and goes away in a couple of minutes
I start run and drive the car on a regular basis to keep all lubed myself

Enjoy

THANKS so much for so quickly responding. I have goals now to follow up on with the suggestions. Looks very helpful.

I also would share that grocery stores that sell a lot of water bottles, will have some nice large fold able pieces of cardboard used to separate levels of product that really cover a lot of floor under the vehicle.

I try to beat their recycling actions they take. Some stores are likely to just give them away instead of bundling it up for removal. Some brands of water don't have these separators but I'm happy with what I've found. Best of luck, and thanks again for your kind responses.
