Hello All,
Took the car in for front end alignment and car remains at facility. The tech drove the car into bay and returned it to the same spot that I drove into. Paid for work and was ready to drive home: when I got in the driver seat noticed the gear shifter was not in park position, but down in reverse "R". Tried to move it up to proper position to start and get out of there. Nothing doing could only get the shifter to go to drive "D", no further. Stormed back into the office and asked when were they planning on telling me the tech broke something on my car. Argruments and alot of finger pointing and I left the car for them to figure how they would like to handle the issue. The car is a 6200 series, 1963 has anyone else ever had this type of issue or know anyway that it can be resolved. I do know at some point I will have to assist them in getting the car taken care of. Any help will be gladly appreciated.

Glad I can help Ron .
Find out where the lever ——that came out —looks like it belongs
Hold it in place any way you might
Reattach it where it looks like it belongs if possible and see if that helps to correct your finding a correct gear issue on the column
Enjoy
Anything positive going on with the gear shift problem ?

Hey Tony!!,
I filed claim with Firestone Corporate, did not want to deal with local or regional. Seemed to me they were trying to wash their hands of the problem and put everything back on me. I speak to a claims specialist tomorow. Once we get it to tranny shop will pass along all the pertinent information to them should they need it. Just horribly madd and upset, something so simple gone so bad!! Keep you all posted
Many Thanks,
Hello All,
Took the car to one of the premier Caddy dismantlers and service departments in my area. Mark was right on point with the part that needs to be replaced the "inside detent control and set screw" along with the "detent spring and roller assembly and attaching screw" on the inside of the tranny. Now that we have the parts targeted and know what we need; we are having trouble locating them so the saga continues. Thanks for all the support along the way the information saved a ton of labor time narrowing down the problem. Hopefully can track down the parts and have a good long cruise before sumer ends!!
Ron
There are a couple of good parts guys posting here who must have a core hydramatic sitting around, so you've got a good shot at getting what you need easily. These are simple parts to remove, just a little messy to open the pan.
The roller detent spring is still available, I'm pretty sure, from Fatsco transmission parts in New Jersey (they're awesome, btw). They may also have the detent assembly, but I never needed one so I can't say they do.
You're very lucky if it didn't knock the end off of the manual valve when it broke. That would require dropping the valve body, and a lot more parts scrounging and expense.
I took a car to an upholstery shop for some interior work. When I went to pick it up, the shifter wouldn't find a detent to stay in gear. The detent spring and roller broke, and it had nothing to do with the shop. Sounds like the same thing with you. cant be blaming a shop for a 50 plus year old part breaking on them.
On a good note, I should have the detent roller. Send me an email to russ85747@hotmail.com
Russ is surely the bottom line right answer to this broken shifter issue especially having had the same experience himself
Always glad that man is on this site for years
Never heard of the those parts before but good to know it’s not to bad a repair to attack
Enjoy
Do let Russ help you acquire your parts

From a current thread regarding a trans gasket replacement on the site right now
The hardest part of replacing the parts for the shift lever detent —would be to get the pan gasket back on and not leak
Perfect time to address trans filter needs and new fresh trans fluid
Trans all better and prepped for the long haul
Ron enjoy getting the car back and enjoying it again
Enjoy
Thanks Tony,
I was reading the threads on the tranny pan gasket!! Guess that's why there was 17 pounds of RTV caked all around the pan. Gonna be Fun!!
Ron
very glad you are getting very close to getting back to driving your pride and joy again
Enjoyed learning some very good info from this thread
Always a FUN thing for me regarding my passion for any and all knowledge regarding our year cars
the joy my 64 Convertible has brought to my life for 55 years is simply priceless for this confirmed Gear head
Enjoy

well thank you UPS for losing the driveshaft that Russ Austin shipped me.
however i still need a rear driveshaft section for my 63. mine has a vibration due to the bushing inside of it. its a shame because the ball and sockets in the cardian joints are perfect but it has a woble on the balancing machine. so . still need the rear section. anyone have a good one ? is there driveshaft alternatives to use ? i am really considering an LS swap and since im fighting the driveshaft search…

So my 63 guide matic headlamps stay on low beam all the time. I have so far bypassed the system and everything works normal. I have been thru the trouble shooting in the manual but this is where the confusion begins.on my car when the power relay is powered I have low beam and when its not powered I have highbeam, this appears to be opposite what the diagnosis says should be correct. The wiring is all original and no wires have been mixed up.has anyone ever unplugged the 2 wire connector…

Having tried both the II and III I can say the multispark feature of the III offers a smoother idle . It is also easier to install .Does not require removal of the distributor

I hope someone can help solve these two electrical problems that appeared one after the other.
By way of background: The car, a '64 Eldorado has very limited use. It was at a restoration shop for 15 months until last January- that supposedly did a bunch of wiring repairs including rebuilding the gas gauge that still hasn't worked properly, and the clock that hasn't worked, and re-soldering the broken wires in the drive door. All window and seat controls appear to be…
