I recently purchased a 64 Cadillac Sedan Deville and I’m pretty sure the engine oil dipstick and Trans dipstick are not from this car. I have seen the dimensions for the oil dipstick elsewhere in the forums so I’m not incredibly worried about finding that out but for the transmission I have no idea. What leads me to believe the dipsticks are wrong is the trans dipstick says capacity 11quarts and after consulting the shop manual it says capacity is 9 and the engine dipstick shows a lot more oil then the engine has. If both my dipsticks are wrong where would you recommend I look for replacements? Any help is greatly appreciated
Going to assume you have the Turbo Hydramatic with a PNRDDL gear selector pattern. The dip stick is 30 inches from the bottom to the top of the cap. It also says 11qts use only cadillac approved transmission fluid.
You are both talking about two different transmissions with the two different gear shift patterns
The stock —-Sedan trans SB the Hydramatic trans that Russ is suggesting you have in that model Cadillac
If you have the PRNDL gear shift pattern ( same as my convert ) your trans has been replaced by someone possibly as that would not be the stock trans in that model from the factory
Fat fingers tony, I was referring to the TH Hydro trans.
it sounds like it's a TH400, by the shift quadrant and the stick, so go with that.
all the Devilles in 64 came with the Turbo 400, so if your car is a Sedan Deville and not a 62 series, it's correct.
The easy ways to tell the difference by looking:
The turbo 400 ‘s shifting is controlled by a vacuum line that connects to the back of a fitting on the carb and only common to that trans
The Hydramatic ‘s shifting is controlled by a —TV rod— that connects —to the side of the carbs linkage
Seeing which one you have will tell you which trans you have
1964 Sedan de Ville came with Turbo Hydra-Matic with PRNDL Shift pattern and had 11 qt 6 oz capacity (see page 2-10 in shop manual), indicates 11 qt capacity and about 30 from top of cap to tip so all sounds correct to me.
For reference the Hydra-Matic dipstic was a completely different design from the THM dipstick in that it had a plunger type section with O-ring at top that sealed as you pressed in the tube, vs the notched twist & lock cap found on the Thm dipstick. The Hydra-Matic dipstick was also about 28.5" from top of cap to tip, and indicates 10 Qt capacity (also confirmed on page 2-10 in 1964 Shop Manual).
Sorry for my confusion about the trans that came stock in your Sedan
As the boys have indicated you have the TH-400 trans stock from the factory and all is well with the dip stick you are using
They do not allow me to be misleading for very long — as you can see
I did learn from this thread that the Sedan De villas did come with the Turbo 400 trans

The new General Motors Transmission introduced in Buicks and Cadillacs in 1964 was called Super Turbine 400 in Buicks and Turbo Hydra-Matic in Cadillacs. It would be introduced as a Turbo Hydramatic 400 in the Olds, Pontiacs and Chevrolet's the following year. Instead of calling these a Turbo Hydramatic 400 many, including myself have just called it a Turbo 400. The Buick transmission was used in the 1964 Cadillacs that came with the new transmission via an adaptor ring. In 1965, Cadillac would get their own Turbo Hydramatic that would mount directly to the back of the transmission along with some internal upgrades.
Turbo 400 name is often used to include GM family of Cadillac Turbo Hyramatic, Buick Super Turbine 400, and Turbo Hydramatic 400 used in the other GM makes, especially givien the fact there literally many millions more Chevy and other Turbo 400 produced than from the Cadillac division. I like to use the correct Cadillac terms Hydra-Matic and Turbo Hydra-Matic so there is not confusion but when someone refers to a Turbo 400 it os pretty clear to me they are not referring to the Hydramatic (also often called a jetaway).
The bottom line is your 1964 Cadillac came with either Hydra-Matic (Series 62, Series 75, Commercial Chassis) or Turbo-Hydramatic (deVilles and Fleetwoods), depending on body style. Any other name is a generalization (e.g. Turbo 400).
The Turbo Hydra- matic new in 64 was a major break thru In its time in improving the automatic transmissions application of Instant available power to the drivetrain and —still used today in high performance applications in drag racing
The trans is basically bullet proof as I have been on this site since 2006 daily and have never seen a request for someone needing to have that trans rebuilt
The reason I have kept my 64 convertible since new is simply how well the 429 Cadillac engine and the Turbo Hydro- matic trans interact together with power always available and the unique torque that combo offers for the drives enjoyment
I have heard it said that Torque - can be additive— and I do agree !
