I have a '63 cad Series 62. I was wondering if these cars had anti-freeze over flow collection bottles? When I turn my car off anti-freeze runs out of the over flow hose. If not is it ok to put one in?

Thanks, Kevin

Dangerous to be opening the stock rad cap when the coolant is hot

coolant is 200 degrees or more so use a rag over the cap and be very careful not to get burned

my own solution is to purchase a Stant rad cap ( 15 1/2 lbs ) with a red pressure release in its top

on all my cars because at some point in time you will experience a need to release the pressure in the rad in many  cases

my 64 429 coolant level is correct when you look inside the rad and the fluid is just covering the coils and you have about an inch of air space left

An overflow bottle is great to be recapturing any coolant overflow so it can be reused   as needed

Retarded timing will cause an engine to be running hotter than it SB

Timing retards as points wear so keep up your tune up  maintenance per the Service Manual

Enjoy

These cars were not originally designed to run with an absolutely full radiator. Some expansion room is needed, or when the engine is stopped, it will relieve itself of being “too full” by releasing some of the hot fluid. After this happens, if you drive it a few more times without topping off the radiator (provided you do not have a condition causing overheating, i.e.: excessively lean fuel:air carb mixture, etc.), the extra coolant loss should stop, and the car should operate in the normal temperature range. After the engine is completely cool (radiator not too warm to rest your hand on the top tank), if you remove the radiator cap slowly, you should still see coolant in the radiator (not exposed radiator coils).

Old  radiator coolant will not exchange heat as it was designed to

It looses it ability to do that over time and SB changed when due ( maintenance )
What is your temp gauge reading at operating temp ? ( which I asked before )

It SB just past the first quarter mark on the gauge when correct which is about 180 degrees

The half way point on the gauge is 200 degrees and hotter than your temp SB

Do examine the the seal surface of the rad cap to the rad

Enjoy

Spec for the cap is 13 1/2 to 16 1/2 lbs so you're good there. I would think that the seals are a standard size. Check the radiator filler neck for imperfections. Does the car run hot?

Would a wrong radiator cap cause this problem? The one I have is rated at 16# and I did put a new one on last summer with the same results. I'm wondering if the cap seal is not the right size.

They did not have overflow bottles back then. There are several aftermarket bottles available. I got one at Autozone and installed where the voltage regulator used to be (now have internally regulated alternator).

Kevin

The car did not come with an overflow collection bottle in these years

I do have an overflow bottle I put in my 64

If your cooling system is overflowing when you shut the car off you are having an issue with the cars cooling system running to hot that you should look into

Where does your car run on the  dash temp gauge ?

Spark Plug Heat Range

I found a diagram that illustrates the main factor in determining a spark plug heat range that I was trying to describe to you during the chapter get together.

Here it is:

The main factor is the length of the ceramic insulator from the middle of the spark plug to the tip (where the spark happens)

The insulator…

Lower Front End Ball Joints

Posted by Logan Robb on May 11, 2023 at 9:04am 7 Comments

Good Morning all!

I took the 64 into the shop to have some adjustments completed and in the process decided to have the lower ball joints replaced as was recommended the last time I had it in. I ordered the parts and came into the shop. They quoted me nearly $500 to replace those lower ball joints requiring nearly 4hrs of labor. Now this is a reputable shop and they know me by name here and they will continue to get my business. I am just questioning what on earth is…
