My 1964 Cadillac electrical system is running around 17 volt which is to high, the alternator, battery and the voltage regulator was replaced but the voltage is still to high, could it be the pig tail that plugs into the voltage regulator.

Do clean you major ground that goes from the battery negative terminal to the frame of the car located under the battery tray to improve electrical performance of the car

Enjoy

Cleaning the grounds— as a general rule—  will bring many things in our cars electrical systems back to life at no expense  — so always do that first

Ground contacts  go bad from the cars age and exposer tho elements if that applies

Regarding  the regulator clean all connection to shinny metal has brought my electrical system and Jason’s  back to life when we both had that issue in the past

That can fix the —red Gen light on issue if that’s what you are seeing

The clips can come out of the harness for better cleaning of them

Enjoy

Enjoy

The most likely cause is a bad regulator ground.  The upper contacts in the regulator are the ones which control the voltage.  The way this is achieved is by connecting a magnetic coil in parallel with the field winding circuit, which opens the field winding contacts when voltage gets high enough to energize the magnet past the tension of a calibrated spring.  This magnetic coil is grounded to the base of the regulator, so that if the regulator isn't grounded, those contacts will never open and the result is runaway voltage in the alternator.  If you have an overcharge condition while your 'GEN' light is lit, this would confirm the bad ground to the body, since both the lower and upper contact coils are grounded the same way.

Another cause could be a misadjusted upper contact.  Follow the instructions in the shop manual to adjust, if you're using an original DR regulator

This is only meaningful if you have an original style regulator and not an electronic replacement.

In addition to checking the other connections, check voltage regulator ground... make sure it is well grounded to radiator support, and radiator support is grounded to main battery ground cable via the short jumper ground pigtail seen in 2nd picture below:

Is this a recurring problem? The connections need to be clean and tight for everything to work together.

Bad Guage?

Posted by Karl Schwarz on August 26, 2020 at 3:08pm 5 Comments

So I am troubleshooting my fuel gauge issue. I bought a new sender and tested it. It  it goes from 1-ohm (empty) to 35-ohm (full). When I test it (outside the tank), when the float is in the up (full) position it only moves the gauge to about 1/2 full. When at the bottom (empty) position the gauge shows empty. This is the same issue I have when I fill and then use the gas in the tank - the gauge never reads ore than half full. Based on what I've read on this thread it would seem like the…
