The other night on my journey home my 1963 Sedan Deville with the 390 began to run rough. Pulled into the Hess gas station over on Route 31 in Clinton to look at it and see what the problem was and check all the fluids of the car. It was down about a quart of oil so I topped that off and all the other fluids checked out fine. When I started Flo back up to head home it ran a little better but good lord did it smoke something fierce out the driver side exhaust pipe. This has happened before but it only does it when the car has been out for more than a half hour.

Does anyone have any ideas what the cause of this is besides mine being that I either have a leaky piston or a bad head. Either one of these will be spelling the end for the car.

Going to do a compression test once I get back from vacation and I will pull out the plugs and see what they look like.

Does anyone know about how much it would cost to have them rebuilt?

Blue is oil, and as Tony said, keep an eye on the radiator fluid level. I would suspect valve seals, and possibly bad rings.  Do a compression test. Wet and dry.

The smoke has a blueish tint to it but it is white.

The car shows 99xxx on the clock but I have not a clue if it has rolled over yet.

Is the smoke color white or blue ?
How many miles on the engine ?
White wb water, a head gasket
Blue is oil , Heads , most likely the valve guides are worn or the oil seals on the valves are shot
A ring problem is possible with very high mileage numbers
Keep an eye on your oil level and the water level in the rad ,as you sb using up one or the other
You were down a quart , so oil is my best guess
The plug sb fouling in the bad cylinder on the drivers side ,so that's your rough running cause
It sb easy to see by looking at the plugs condition

Dash removal

Hello everyone,

On a 63 CDV, if a guy wanted to remove the entire dash to get all the metal painted, and do some other things behind there, how would he go about doing that?  I checked here and the shop manual, but can't find a complete guide.

As always, and help or direction is appreciated.  Thanks!

Introducing myself

Thanks for letting me join the club.  Picked up this ‘64 Coupe Deville a few months ago out of Beverly MA, the car has few stickers on it from various Cadillac clubs, didn’t know if anyone might recognize it from it’s “Glory days.” Everything seems pretty healthy except for the body and some very Mickey Mouse repairs, was wondering if anyone had any leads on…
