I'm in the process of rebuilding the front suspension with a kit from Kanter.  The original upper ball joints were tack welded in as is often the norm.

The replacement ball joints came with a bracket with a hole that looks like it might prevent the ball joint from turning and maybe you could put a bolt through into the control arm to retain it?  Unfortunately the kit came with no instructions.

The odd thing is if I install the ball joint as shown in the photo, the bracket won't sit flush with the control arm and will have to be compressed severely to make the joint seat completely.

The only other difference between the old joint and new is the grease boot threads on rather than relying on a spring to hold it secure to the joint.

Anybody seen this before?

That's normal, just run a bead down to the control arm.

Hi Russ,

Thanks for response.  I know tack welding the ball joint is normal but the bracket is what I'm not sure of.  Are you saying to weld the bracket to the control arm?

The upper ball joints are side specific. They press into the control arm from the top until they seated in the control arm. The flange on the joint should be squared up with equal space from the control arm sides. The flange keeps the ball joint from possibly spinning in the hole. The nut screws on from the bottom side and is tightened securely to keep the ball joint in place. Be sure to put right on right side, left on the left. It's very important.  HTH.

Thanks David, that makes sense.  I appreciate the help!

Posted by Dave Fehrle on March 23, 2024 at 3:23pm 8 Comments

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?

Vintage Air AC

Posted by Chase on March 21, 2024 at 5:55am 0 Comments

Hey everyone, has anybody done a Vintage Air AC/Heat setup in their car? I want to bypass the old vacuum setup and go with a Vintage Air Gen 2 model. Before I get started, does anyone have any experience with this? (Which model to go with, do’s and dont’s, etc.) It looks pretty involved. Any and all info/pics would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

'63 Eldorado trumpet horn + 2 standard horns restoration

My son, unbeknownst to me, had all three of the horns on our 1963 Eldorado completely restored. We had recently added the Eldorado trumpet horn to the two standard horns and the sound was not very good... we had heard good ones so we knew something was not right... but there was not much we could do to get better sound from the 3 horns.

There is a restoration service called The Horn Works who my son…
