QUestion. Should i wait till engine cools after the 1500 rpm initial test, the tighten and then do the driving aspect, or after the 30 minutes of 1500, tighten and then do rest of break in?
I had intended to crank w valve pans off to make sure oil is bubling up through the rocker arms, would that be wise? Otherwise to get to some of the head bolts, ypu would hv to redo the valve pans to access the head bolts under them. Yes or no?

Put your oil in the engine
Pump oil thru the engine thru the dist shaft you should see oil at the rocker arms after that
Put some additional oil on the rocker arms and put the valve covers on
If they are off they will make a mess with the fan blowing the oil around —you
Have your dist lock down bolt wrench handy
After cranking the engine ( someone else ). and the engine fire by slightly moving the dist find the place that the engine runs best —by feel at this point and lock down the dist there
The person behind the wheel will have to keep the engine over 1500 RPMs while you are adjusting the dist at cranking start up for the car to keep running ( you cannot do both at that time )
Discuss hand signals so the person understand how you want the RPM to be sounding at around 1500
Do the run up for the 1/2 hour and keep the engine running over 1500 RPMs as best you can no need to be exact about RPM at all — just in the ball park
Let engine cool —-then go over all the bolts you can torque down again —- removing the valve covers and torquing down the heads again- best with engine warm but not to hot so you can work
Tighten as many exhaust manifold bolts as is possible
These engines take a long time to cool off
You want to adjust your timing after you start the engine—- for the second time
Then button up the engine again and take it out staying blocks away from your home in a circle so if you have any issues they show —- VERY close to home !
The pertronixs ignition SB fine as it is for start up —so no issue there
Then get the car on the road up to 30 MPH and 50 MPH and put a little time on it stopping and checking the engine bay from time to time ( looking and listening to the engine )
Looking for leaking hoses - gas lines — vacuum leaks etc
Do remember you SB burning a bit more oil than usual until the rings seat - keep an eye on that and keep some with you for longer drives
Do your first oil and filter change after 1000 miles to remove any debris that may be in the oil from the break in period
Put miles on the engine to complete the early break in and enjoy you new great engine
Sometimes bugs will show themselves even with the best mechanics so be looking for things that may require you attention —- if any
A video of the engine would be great—- when you have time for that
After this you will be a first class driveway hobby mechanic—--no matter what anyone else has to say —- as I see it !
EXCITING TIME !!!
Enjoy

Jason, I liked the detail and information you have provided. I would like to do mine similar to yours. Can you help? Do you have trunk material? OPGI is sending the trunk product for my 63 Fleetwood. But it does cover the entire trunk as yours was done. If you do not have can you give me a reference? Thanks!! Bob

I mentioned during the 63/64 chapter zoom meeting on 3/21 that we had installed a car lift in our garage. Someone asked what kind and I didn't have the info at hand, so here is a link to it and also a link to some tall jack stands we use to add more stability to the car and an additional safety factor. There is something about getting underneath one of these cars that makes me a little nervous! …

Just developed a significant leak coming from a freeze plug right over the starter. Would this be considered a "cam plug" i.e. like Dorman 17616DS? Our cars have multiple sizes of plugs on engine block and I want to get the right one. Also, does anyone know how pricey this is for a shop to fix? Thanks!
