Jason's 1964 429 Cadillac Engine Project - Engine Fires Up!

Looks like I never loaded this video from May 27, 2012 when I fired up my rebuilt 429 last year. Here it is:

After rebuilding the 429 and redoing the engine bay in my 1964 Cadillac I fired it up on May 27, 2012.

If you have deep grooves it can affect oil pressure and oil volume and probably want to have it replaced or resurfaced. From the picture it looks like at least moderate grooves. I've never had any experience with having these honed, resleeved, etc, but vaguely remember someone else here saying they have.  If you want me to put you on the wait list for a VG used one shoot me an email to jasonedge@nc.rr.com. Not to be clear, they almost all have some degree of minor scratching on the 40+ used ones I've pulled in, but often they will be pretty decent if the engine has never pushing any metal through it.

I've never seen any gears like that with the hex hole...either used or rebuilt. The gear off the distributor is going to engage the pump gear the same way regardless of which end is facing out. I would probably go with the flat end down at the cover.  I'm guessing these are rebuild gears.

I checked my 3 used gear sets and all are simply flat on both ends. Since I'm seeing all flat ended "pump" gears with the hole I would put the flat end on the bottom next to the cover. I don't think it matters but you might check the wear pattern on the cover plate and see if you can match up which end would cause it. Physically the pump gear will turn either way as it's just a gear engaging with another but understand your concern to make sure it is right.

No. the oil pump gear is driven by the bottom of the distributor which is in turn driven by a gear on the front of the camshaft. The distributor is removed so you can access the top gear on the oil pump.  I use a drill, 3/8" extension and 12 mm socket to fit on the top of the oil pump drive gear, that is otherwise fits inside the bottom of the distributor shaft.

You can see a 12 mm 3/8" socket on the shaft in this picture: https://api.ning.com/files/JOi7zGa2fuxiCdhSBFlviwih67X8LmWbzZFJ3ujl...

Are you referring to another video?  I did post a video of using a drill to turn the oil pump gears to push the oil up through the engine.  The goal there was just to pre-lube the engine before getting ready to fire up for first time. Here is the link to that video: http://6364cadillac.ning.com/video/jason-engine-project-pt-4-primin...

1963 RHS A/C kick panel - photos needed

Posted by SK on June 2, 2025 at 2:20pm 2 Comments

Could someone post front and back photos of the 1963 right-hand kick panel with A/C?

My car didn’t come with the original kick panels, so it's a bit of a mystery to me how I should cut the backing board and carpet to fit around the A/C.

Many thanks,

-Samu

Loud air moving sound within carb with cleaner removed

Posted by Dave Fehrle on March 23, 2024 at 3:23pm 8 Comments

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?
