So… I do have a few of 63 Coupes, all have same setup with carbs, Pertronix, shroud, new US Radiator radiators etc … but only one of them gets a bit hot when I am hauling faster than 60mph and car has no problems going 80-90mph, the thing is that unlike my other 63s this one gets hotter, temp goes in between a quarter-half mark on temp gauge! On top of that the plate under the steering wheel, steering column etc get hot as well so ambient heat under the hood is high! of course I do hustle and turn the heater full blast to beat the temp down a bit but it’s not the way to fix the issue cuz then I am sweating my S off in the car.

I did check the temp with temp gun, upper house was 210-220 , lower radiator hose was around 180ish F!

but when I just cruise in town temp on radiator hoses is fairly normal, upper 180-190, lower 170…

thermostat is 180F, new radiator, shroud, fan blade with a clutch, Pertronix installed, freshly rebuilt carb, freshly new green tip plugs set to around 42-45…

might have to replace the fan shroud for the regular NONclutch 7 arm fan blade.

still suspecting water pump which may not be enclosed impeller one and maybe coolant bypasses it…

does anybody have any ideas where o look at OR had a similar problem?

thanks

Mack

What carb are you running on the hot running car?  Is the timing set to 5 deg max?

Freshly rebuilt and adjusted Rochester.
timing at around 7-9 degrees cuz I am on 6k feet elevation.

Although the engine runs better at advance timing, it creates excessive heat that the cooling system can not get rid of. Bring the timing back to 5 deg. Elevation has noting to do with the timing. You can fatten up the carbs jets if you want.

Did you have this problem prior to installing your Pertronics ? I work on distributors and have seen some of these point conversions cause problems.  Reduce timing to 5 degs,  check that your vacuum advance is working properly. is your advance stop rubber bushing gone most are after 60 years .

Hey Chris

I just sent you email per Jason Edge regarding my distributor rebuild!

my vacuum advance is working yet distributor is not advancing so I believe that this is the culprit!

Hi Mack,

You are doing the right thing sending this to Chris Carlson!!!!!!

1963 RHS A/C kick panel - photos needed

Posted by SK on June 2, 2025 at 2:20pm 2 Comments

Could someone post front and back photos of the 1963 right-hand kick panel with A/C?

My car didn’t come with the original kick panels, so it's a bit of a mystery to me how I should cut the backing board and carpet to fit around the A/C.

Many thanks,

-Samu

Loud air moving sound within carb with cleaner removed

Posted by Dave Fehrle on March 23, 2024 at 3:23pm 8 Comments

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?
