Hello, I now own my grandfather's '64 Sedan DeVille with a 490ci Carter 3903S carburetor. My more mechanically-inclined friend and I are troubleshooting some carburetion issues that came up. In 2016, we rebuilt the carburetor with an AutoZone GP Sorenson Carburetor Kit 96-568 (https://www.autozone.com/fuel-delivery/carburetor-kit/p/gp-sorensen...) with improved carburetion results at that time. The link has a picture that is more clear than the image I was going to attach. At that time, we left the gasket (which we now know was a Fel-Pro 60034) that was touching the intake manifold alone. Replaced all other gaskets with what we believed to be correct from the kit.

Recently, we decided to rebuild it again for a number of reasons (starting that required 5-6 pedal pumps to prime, reduced power, bogging on quick acceleration from dead-stop) with a Mike's Carburetor Kit K4011 (https://www.carburetor-parts.com/k4011.html

After reading Jason Edge's post from here, he states "For the Carter AFB I sell the Fel Pro 60034. It takes 2 of these gaskets, one below and one above the insulator."

Neither of these two Carter labeled carburetor rebuild kits include the 60034 style gasket. Jason's pictures comparing the Carter to the Rochester show two differences. Here is the 60034 carter. Red ink shows the areas that are missing from Rochester.

My friend and I are very confused and initially believed that the kits we bought were correct but according to Jason Edge the gaskets those two suppliers include are not for THIS Carter apparently.

Can anyone provide some insight or direction as to who is correct? If Jason is correct then we should be following this pattern:

Intake Manifold --> 60034 gasket --> insulator spacer --> 60034 gasket --> metal shim --> carburetor

Thank you,

ROB

Carter gasket is FelPro 60034
Rochester gasket is FelPro 9770.
See pictures below.
You will need 2 gasket as one is above and one below the intake to carb insulator.
If you cannot find them I sell them new in pairs for $15.

Here are pictures of both types of gaskets:

Thank you Jason and Tony/Ginny for your replies. We found the 60034 gasket  through Napa Auto Parts. I just don’t get why the “Carter” labeled kits from those two suppliers wouldn’t include them

Someone just obviously mixed things up when they were putting the kit together. Other than the many gaskets I have seen first hand from the 56 and counting parts cars, is the fact the Rochester listed FelPro gasket says it replaces 147 7371 on the packaging and looking at the Cadillac Master Parts book, that is the original # they list for the Rochester with the Carter having a different #.  To me that is a double check confirmation of which is which.   Also, just for reference the original Carter gasket was part # 147 7370.

I think I’ll contact Mike’s Carburetor and let them know of the issue with our Carter’s. Great. Thank you for that info Jason. I find that detailed info like this is so valuable.

Loud air moving sound within carb with cleaner removed

Posted by Dave Fehrle on March 23, 2024 at 3:23pm 8 Comments

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?

Vintage Air AC

Hey everyone, has anybody done a Vintage Air AC/Heat setup in their car? I want to bypass the old vacuum setup and go with a Vintage Air Gen 2 model. Before I get started, does anyone have any experience with this? (Which model to go with, do’s and dont’s, etc.) It looks pretty involved. Any and all info/pics would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Who rebuilds original AC  accumulator dryers for 1964 Cadillac? I have been on Classic auto air in Tampa FL wait list for over a year ,  There is one on Old air products web site that looks very similar to the original # 21-4214A but states it fits 1962 Gm cars, The one recommended for a 1964 Cadillac is half the length 21-4215A    What  is everyone using ? I would prefer to be as original as possible. Thanks

'63 Eldorado trumpet horn + 2 standard horns restoration

My son, unbeknownst to me, had all three of the horns on our 1963 Eldorado completely restored. We had recently added the Eldorado trumpet horn to the two standard horns and the sound was not very good... we had heard good ones so we knew something was not right... but there was not much we could do to get better sound from the 3 horns.

There is a restoration service called The Horn Works who my son…
