I checked the Help page and did a search on the site but didn't see any subjects on steering play/slack.  Since I had someone complete a front end rebuild (Kanter kit, all the control arm bushings, tie rods, sway bar, ball joints, everything) on my 64 deville conv,  there is quite a bit of play in the steering.  At times it's hard to keep the car straight going down the highway.  When it starts drifting and you go to correct, it almost overcorrects and gets scary weaving back and forth trying to keep it center.  I'll try to use my original Maintenance manual to see how to address (maybe there's an adjustment on the worm gear or other adjustments on the steering box?) but wasn't sure if others have had similar issues.....  any help is appreciated.   thanks, Nile

Hi Nile,

After all that front end work, there is an adjustment on the steering box, but it shouldn't be overdone.  On top of the box there is an allen key hole, set inside a nut.  You can see this looking over the fender and may have  get underneath the wrench it.  The nut (maybe 9/16 wrench) is loosened and the allen hole can be tightened 1/4 of a turn clockwise.  Hold the allen key in place while tightening the nut back up.  Unless the box is very old and worn, you might get some slack taken out.  I wouldn't do much more than 1/4 turn.  See if this helps at all.

Hi Nile,

One more thought on the play in the steering.  Did you test/inspect you Rag Joint?  That can cause a lot of play in the steering as well.  I forgot to mention it with my first rejoinder.  Look at this first as it may be the culprit.  The slight steering box adjustment is your last resort.

Thank you Dennis for the help!  I love this website for this:  passing on knowledge.  I'm going to give this a shot!  thanks much.  Nile

Hi Nile,

You are welcome!  Remember, if you adjust the steering box, no more than 1/8th to 1/4 turn clockwise.  The rag joint play is primarily important.  Best of luck with it!!

1963 RHS A/C kick panel - photos needed

Posted by SK on June 2, 2025 at 2:20pm 2 Comments

Could someone post front and back photos of the 1963 right-hand kick panel with A/C?

My car didn’t come with the original kick panels, so it's a bit of a mystery to me how I should cut the backing board and carpet to fit around the A/C.

Many thanks,

Edelbrock Carb Block off Plates

Posted by Chase on March 12, 2025 at 2:05pm 14 Comments

Hey guys,

I have installed the same Edelbrock carb and have done everything the same as Jason’s carb and intake project. In the spring and summer months the car starts, runs and idles great! In the fall and winter months on a cold start, the car starts awful and wants to die until it warms up. I have to keep my foot on the throttle until it warms up or it will idle just terrible and try to die. Once it’s warm, it runs fantastic! Whats going on here? I was thinking of removing the…
