HELP! I've got a 1963 Series 62 convertible with about 140,000 miles on it. I developed a trans leak . I took it to the shop I use that specializes in classic cars, but they are less familiar with this transmission. They indicate it is relatively rare (few cars, few years). They are going to engage a transmission shop to take a look at it and do any repairs. They are concerned about getting parts for it, and that if they break into it and it needs more than just simple repairs and asked if I'd consider a transmission swap to a more modern transmission.
I'd like to control my cost, and while my car is no concourse car, I love having it. I did not notice the transmission slipping. The noticed some slipping, but that could be related to the lower fluid level from the leak. The leak appeared suddenly (no leak to puddle after not driving for a few days)
I'd love to get some advice.
1. Anyone have a source of a known good transmission? (I know it will be $$ to ship)
2. Any thoughts on source for parts for the unit?
3. Any thoughts on fix or replace (i.e., likey major issues or likely easy fix - I know there is no real way to know, but generally how well do these hold up?)
3. Any thoughts or recommendation for a replacement trans. If I go this route, I'd want to go with something that facilitates an engine swap if I ever want to put in LS or similar in in the future.
Any thoughts or experience in this area much appreciated!

You have a hydramatic trans in your 63
Not rare at all —and in many many year Cadillacs prior to 63
Fatsco.com in NJ should have any parts you need to repair it
I would take back the car and find a trans shop yourself that will do your trans or you will be paying your shop an extra fee for there service ( for doing nothing )
You are correct — the trans does not shift up —correctly when the trans fluid is down a quart but does not ever slip
If it is slipping clutches need replacement
The trans dip stick is marked —-in pints
Jason Edge on here has hydros that worked when pulled out —but they need a rebuild ( gaskets dry out with no fluid in the trans and sitting for a while )
I have no suggestions for a replacement— trans
Keeping and repairing the stock trans would be the only way I would go or you are devaluing the car making it an abortion ( as in the news lately )
Your engine trans interaction is part of what makes our years the enjoyable Cadillac ride we love
Do you know yet the exact location of the trans leak ? ? That is needed to determine the repair needed
Just top off the fluid and check it at operating temp with the car running until you repair the problem
Just my 2 cents and opinions
Enjoy

I found a diagram that illustrates the main factor in determining a spark plug heat range that I was trying to describe to you during the chapter get together.
Here it is:
The main factor is the length of the ceramic insulator from the middle of the spark plug to the tip (where the spark happens)
The insulator…

Good Morning all!
I took the 64 into the shop to have some adjustments completed and in the process decided to have the lower ball joints replaced as was recommended the last time I had it in. I ordered the parts and came into the shop. They quoted me nearly $500 to replace those lower ball joints requiring nearly 4hrs of labor. Now this is a reputable shop and they know me by name here and they will continue to get my business. I am just questioning what on earth is…
