My reservoir is a little low. Any recommendations on my purchase of refill fluid? There are likely new fluids and I’d like to buy the right product. Thanks.

Hi Bobby,

Some of the Auto Parts stores now carry Power Steering fluids that have a stop leak additive.  I believe Prestone and Valvoline are two of them.  If I am a little low, I use one of them.  Seems to work well.  Hope you are well and regards.

I do believe the book calls for ATF in the Power Steering Reservoir.

I do find mine gets low about every 6 mos, but no drips to my knowledge. As Dennis said, I think Lucas makes a Power Steering additive for a stop leak application.

Me personally, I am not sure I'd use that in a 60 y/o car, I'd say if its not leaking visibly, then top it off and move on. Just keep an eye on it!

Hope all is well with you! Have a great one!

Logan

Thanks to you both, Logan and Dennis.  I didn’t look in the repair manual. The owners manual didn’t specify.  I think it’s low since I had the front cover work was done as I don’t see a leak.

Bobby,

Just keep an eye on it from time to time as you are doing.

Hey Bobby

just adding my. 10 cents worth. I added a power steering filter to mine as it may help keeping the lines clean

regards

phil

Hi Phil,

Do you have a picture of that Power Steering filter you wrote about?  Interesting!

Dennis DiBari (Still working on my grill - inspired by you.)

Hi Dennis

see the attached for a picture of the power steering filter

I replaced the power steering pump a couple of years ago as the old one was leaking badly and spraying fluid everywhere it also was  marking a whining noise ( a bit like the wife sometimes)once I removed the pump I found the the old dip stick in side it which probably didn’t do it any good, since the replacement I have had no problems or fluid loss.a mechanic mate suggested the filter it seemed like a good idea

im still working on the grill about 70 % finished

regards

Phil

Hi Phil,

Thank you for posting the picture of the PS filter.  I never saw one of these and I truly like the idea.  By the way, my wife sometimes makes the same whining noise!!!!

Hi Bob,

The manual calls for GM Power Steering fluid. I bought this from Amazon and it seemed to work well.

ACDelco GM Original Equipment 10-5073 Power Steering Fluid

The manual says in a pinch you can use Transmission fluid. Comparing the GM Fluid to the Transmission Fluid the GM Fluid seemed a bit thinner. I had 100% transmission fluid in mine and pumped it out and replaced it with the GM stuff. Might have been my imagination but the steering felt a little easier with the GM Fluid.

1963 RHS A/C kick panel - photos needed

Posted by SK on June 2, 2025 at 2:20pm 2 Comments

Could someone post front and back photos of the 1963 right-hand kick panel with A/C?

My car didn’t come with the original kick panels, so it's a bit of a mystery to me how I should cut the backing board and carpet to fit around the A/C.

Many thanks,

-Samu

Loud air moving sound within carb with cleaner removed

Posted by Dave Fehrle on March 23, 2024 at 3:23pm 8 Comments

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?
