My rms is leaking again.  I hv cked all other options for leaks and its none of those.  Ie, oil presdure, valve covers, etc.  

So i called egge to order another one.  I asked the guy wat contack cement is required. He didnt know. Told me to call Roy at best gasket.

Surprisingly, he ansers the phone. So i went through the speil that many of of have had regarding RMS.  He said that this seal is one of there most leakfree seals.   Sells 600 plus a year.  

He did say, that if the engine had been line bored (??) They are more inclined not to work as it becomes sinorly out of round.  Im guessing he means changing the diameter of the crankshaft during builds.  I told him mine had only been polished.  

I said well whats the solution?  He said many peoole are using a shim ( i think he said a 20000th thick or maybe 2000th thick) piece of paper that is inserted into the groove so as to provide a little more pushing pressure against the crankshaft to seal the oil off.  He said some use it on both top and bottom of bearing cap, but some just lower. I guess depending on whether crank is out of engine or not.  He also said they do not suggest using sealnt or cement on their ends, but that many offset the ends into the ends into the groove.  He is mailing me a couple of those shims.  For those way more knowledgeable about engines. If you have more detailed questions, ypu might call him.  Hecwas quite patient with my questions, but for those of us been chasing this leak awhile, it could be part of reason why.

I am going to give you a very big kiss ( on the cheek !) if you solve this oh so difficult oil seal problem for us 

As you have done more with the subject than many others here there is some justice in you being the one to solve the entire communities issue with this oil leaking RMS 

The info you came across  is from a reasonably good source who should know the subject very well

So why did Best Gaskets not tell you this when you bought his gasket for the RMS ??? You need a shim ? ?

Hope you have found the answer many are looking for 

This SB the fifth time —you will be installing that seal and we may have a light at the end of this tunnel for all your hard work on the subject 

I could not be more excited than I am !! To be watching this problem get resolved 


Well,  im not sure why,, one thing is they dont sell directly.  And, i guess, according to him. Ghey dont hv that much issue or people just dont report it to them, only to the retail outlets, and, they may hear the complaint, but never convey it.  He [Roy] was very nice, i think he is the owner, no scretary. No switchboard,  he picks up his own calls i guess.

Anyway,  for those of you with decades of experience, and hv further questioms for clarifications, install pricedures, id suggest calling him.

Can a piece of paper make thst much differnce afa pressure on the crankshaft?   Thats an engineering questiin i coukd never address, but some of you probably could

The thickness of the shim and the material it is made of I am looking forward to learning 


Tony, here is a picture of the shims i recd from best gasket.  They look loke someone ran some construction paper through a paper shredder.  He said just cut tgem down to fit the width of the channel that the gasket goes in.  I guess it doesnt take much to put some addl lift to the gasket to squeeze off the oil. Im guessing its some sort of oil resistant paper of some kind, not just paper

.Here is also an exerpt out of jalopy journal website regarding above honing, and shims,  just another reference article.  .002 was the number the guy at bestvsaid they hv heard of people using.

This is the —most excited I have been on this site in some time —getting this rear main crank oil leak  seal issue solved is as big as it gets regarding restoring our Classic Antigue Cadillac 

OIL LEAKS ——-SUCK !!!!!!!!!!


Not a done deal yet!  But an option, i guess

I have been chatting with another individual with the same problem.  New engine rebuilt leaks at the new rear main seal. replaced twice and still leaks.  Finally found an original rear main seal and no more leaks. I have been talking to Best gasket and they still are trying to blame the line honing of the engine. 

Funny thing is, that particular engine was not line honed. The rep knows that from talking with the shop that rebuilt the engine. 

So, if you have replaced your rear main seal with a Best gasket seal and you have leaks, call Best gasket and let them know their product is defective.  They need to fix this.

Who was it that used an original rear main seal and fixed the leak issue for themselves 

Was it you or the person you  just mentioned 

Best Gaskets knows there is a problem with the gasket if they are now offering  a shim to correct there faulty gasket 

I know this is the brand that most have used 

Do we have any other brand options that SB looked into that you may know ?

You and Kim have more experience than most replacing this rear main seal —with no one getting the no leak result in the end —-after a lot of frustrating wrenching 


Tony, let me clarify the shim thing.   He said that he knew people were using these shims tontrybandcapply more pressure to the CS.  He wasnt realy saying we acknowledge it in any official manner, but these were some possible worknarounds people were using, along w the suggestion of the line bore thing.  I didnt mean to implybhe had made any official proclamation.  It seems this is prevalent on many cars. Fords, other chevyes, etc, as i was searching for other fixes,   some even use this alum strips that they cut out at .002 to fit and use in same way as the paper shims already suggested.   They all hv their on ways of trying to fix it beyond just the gasket R/R.

Rumble Sound at 55-60 mph

64 Coupe DeVille , while driving at 55-60 mph I have a oscillating rumble sound . Steering wheel does not shake or vibrate . Transmission mount looks good .Tires were replaced 2 years ago balanced and rebalanced recently. Axel bearings were just replaced, rear differential assembly was just replaced with a Posi track ,pinion bearings good. Fresh gear lube. Driveshaft checked and balanced the other day ,new center bearing installed and new bearing carrier assembly too. Trying to figure this…


1963 series 62 convertible transmission issue

Hello I've been restoring a 63 for way to many years. Down to almost done, but have issue with trans linkage, when column in park shift rod 2 inches short. everything original. been trying to find picture of manual rod hooked up from under car to see position of linkage. was wondering if anybody has access for pictures. I wanted to see if my manual linkage is bent  wrong out of the trans if somebody dropped the trans or something. Doesn't make sense why it doesn't work. Thanks for any input…
