I have a 1963 Model 62 convertible. I am trying to remove my wiper motor to replace its relay that is sticking. I got the shroud top ventilator frame off using the directions in the Shop Manual (note 16-6), but I can't figure out how to detach the wiper transmission from the motor. The Shop Manual (page Page 12-52, note 75-a 5) says to "Disconnect the linkage by removing the retainer"

The back of the assembly is not easy to get to. See photo below of the nut I see in there. Before I figure out how to get in there to remove that nut i want to be sure taking this nut off is the way to remove the retainer. 

Any tips on how to get the nut on and off are much appreciated.

Hi Karl,

     I have a 64 Coupe - Series 62 and after removing the cowl assembly, there should be a retainer clip that comes off.  The WW motor should come out with the small arm and nut attached (as you show in your picture).  It is a tight spot around that access plate, but I'm pretty sure the motor comes out with the arm and nut still attached.

I believe the clip is to the left of the arm in the photo.  They don't give much room around the access plate, so use a good halogen light to get a good view of it.

     If you get the motor out with the arm, make sure to put the arm and nut in the same position on the new motor.  It must be put on the same position, which should be the parked position for the wipers.  Hope this helps.

You have heard the term "more than one way to skin a cat"? This applies here.

I have always simply unbolted the wiper motor from the firewall, pulled it forward to get access to that nut, loosening the nut with a box end wrench (one with a slight bend makes it easier), then as it loosens use my finger to make final turns and remove the nut.  

With over 60 parts cars and removing and installing mine several times on Dino and several other past driver cars, I have never dropped that nut. If it were to fall straight down, it would just hit the shelf and you can probably just reach down it stick a magnet in to retrieve.

I do this because those 5 chrome cowl grill hold down clamp screws tend to rust in place ... not to mention you are going to unbolt the wiper motor anyway. Call it the brute force method but that is what I have done. I have never tried to access from above.

That clips is also a bit finicky and could see putting it back on from above would be about as "touchy" as putting the nut back on.   Speaking of the nut it is a 1/4"-28 (fine), serrated flange head nut. It is not the more standard 1/4"-20 nut, so you always want to go back on with the fine 1/4" nut.

Below is a picture of that nut when you pull the motor off the wall.

Hey everyone, has anybody done a Vintage Air AC/Heat setup in their car? I want to bypass the old vacuum setup and go with a Vintage Air Gen 2 model. Who rebuilds original AC  accumulator dryers for 1964 Cadillac? I have been on Classic auto air in Tampa FL wait list for over a year ,  There is one on Old air products web site that looks very similar to the original # 21-4214A but states it fits 1962 Gm cars, The one recommended for a 1964 Cadillac is half the length 21-4215A    What  is everyone using ? I would prefer to be as original as possible. Thanks
