I haven been able to check for the starter items until today,  so i went out and noticed a lot of fluids on the ground that had run down towards the front of the car as it was on a slope.  so i looked quickly and could see active dripping,, touched it, and it was gas!!!

i opens the hood, and up around the carb, i noticed a puddle of gas ( see picture attached)  i had seen this the other night when i was trying to figure out the starter thing and just figured it was from where i had pour some gas in carb to help start and figured it was run off or i had missed some.  so i absorbed it, cleaned it up dry.  noticed the accelerator pump was a little damp dried it too, and left car as it seemed the starter or straps had been problem,,   so i was surprised to see all the gas and fluid underneath,,, i checked the fuel filter and it was dry as well as the hoses.,  it looks like, but cant be sure, the highest point is the accelerator pump,, now would that continually leak for 4 days with out the engine running  to create this kind of leaking ?  what would be my procedure from here for diagnosis and repair,  if you can tell from the pictures.  that little pool is about an inch deep below he carburetor.. so it holding a fair amount of fuel,,guessing about as big as a thumb,, and the squiggly marks on the accelartore pump are gas and liquid below the rubber boot

thanks,,

Rest assured, if the carburetor can't control gravity pressure from a mostly full fuel tank, it most likely will not control 6 pounds of pressure from the fuel pump, while running. The leakage may be slight at the present time, and may not be enough to cause a noticeable running issue except poor fuel economy and a sooty exhaust. But, in time it will cause a running issue, most likely at an inopportune time. Sitting over a period of time with gravity pressure, made a slight issue surface to be found. It should be corrected with a disassemble, inspection, cleaning of the carburetor and a new kit installed. Not to be disrespectful, but, I doubt this issue will correct itself. You may get by for a while like it is, but sooner or later it will get worse. Good luck, please keep us posted on your issue.

well, i got the car as flat as i could with a little tilt to the oil pan screw,, opened her up and it had NO SEMBLANCE of oil except it was dark,,, it flowed like water and smelled like gas,,,i am letting it sit for now and just drain,  and air out,,

for reference, the car sat tank high for about 3 days,, and then when the starter issue popped up, i notice the gas pool on top of engine below the acelerator arm when i first wrote about the starter issue,, so now its going  about  6 days of tank high parked condition.   may get to filling her up later tonight , and will pull that ground strap while i have er up.,, currently, if i can get her started after all this and get her to a safe location where i can fool with it and address the starter and the carb while its parked flat, and not in front of someones house.  that is my current goal,,

Hi David, you're correct on a lot of this and I may be proved very wrong on my theory, hell, it wouldn't be the first time. LOL.

I had come across this exact situation years ago and what I'd said earlier did prove to be the problem.... It was this quote from Kim in another thread.....

Quote: I was going to pull the starter out myself,, the car is on such an incline,, i dont know if it can be towed due to its length an location of where i parked it,, even getting under it is going to be a challenge: Unquote.

I thought it was odd it was dripping fuel from the pump plunger seal at the top and that was the only thing that steered me away from exactly what you are saying. I would have thought, the floats would've caused all the fuel into the manifold.

Its a tricky one for sure and as long as Kim gets the car going again is the main thing.

After flatteni g car, draining oil (an gas] i chrcked the accelesrtot pump rod, the littlerubber boot, everthung on top is hambone dry, no seepage at all. Still airing it out,

UPDATE !!!

well, i got the earl changed, new filter, it was pretty big,, like a regular car,, loaded up wth z rod amsoil per Carl Fielding here back when i bought the thing, ( where has he been by the way, haven't seen his name lately.)  anyway, got the oil in, filter changed, undid the coil wire and the connectors,,, and gave it a turn and WHAMMO!!!!! looked like old faithful blew from the open spark plug holes,,, the engine did turn though, i did it several times, ( about 10 to blow out what may be left per earlier instructions..  but the thing is, it did turn over,, so , i hooked it al back up,, plugs coil gave it a go on the key, and it wouldnt start,, it was turning over and over, and the battery went down,, so i hooked up the hd2500 diesel to it, let it be a while, and went back got on the pedal, and after 4 or 5 goes,, it finally sputtered to a start,, l let it sort it self out, it was sputtering and kicking, smoke blowing out the back,, but it finally settled down, i put her in gear and took it around the block to park it in a flat safe place in the event things go south over the next few days, i can access it easily.  get it lifted and that sort of thing,

so, besides the oil specifications, what should my next step be,, i ordered a starter the other day when we thought it was a starter thing, but now that we know it seems to be ok, i guess i will turn it back,  or maybe just hold a few weeks to see if something re occurs.

as to the carburetor, is there a check to see if things are over filling or whatever Dave was talking about,, or is that a preventative maintenance thing,, and have it rebuilt,, i want to have confidence in my car to start and get me where i go, i use it quite often, i like to drive it,, ,does my image good, and we all know, image is everything..

so, what follow up should i be looking at.

thanks so much to all that helped me,, i never would have known what to do or how to do it, but the detailed instructions and explanations of what was going on, gave me more insight into engines in general.. so thanks so much for all the input.

Sincerely

Kim

Hey Kim, just fit the new starter motor regardless and keep the old one for a spare.

One less thing to worry about and if ya battery is good, it'll go first time, every time.

I'm really pleased you've been able to give it a run around the block.

Great news, Kim! ZRod Amsoil is all the oil you need for that engine. It has all the additives to protect the cam and lifters without adding anything else. In fact, Amsoil recommends "not" adding any additive to their oils. You can't buy better oil than Amsoil, that's the brand I use also. I put the Amsoil HDD 5-30 along with a Wix filter in my 63.

Keep an eye on the exhaust pipe for heavy black sooty deposits and check the plugs after you have accumulated some miles. If the exhaust pipe and plugs stay clean, like Tony said, you're good to go. If they are black and sooty, you need to address the carburetor float and float valves.

Glad you got your girl running again, keep us posted on your progress!

Tha ks for all the guidance. Will post up any changes

short follow up here,,

should i change oil and filter again in a couple hundred miles,, to clear out any further gas that may be lingering,,??

Loud air moving sound within carb with cleaner removed

Posted by Dave Fehrle on March 23, 2024 at 3:23pm 8 Comments

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?

Vintage Air AC

Posted by Chase on March 21, 2024 at 5:55am 0 Comments

Hey everyone, has anybody done a Vintage Air AC/Heat setup in their car? I want to bypass the old vacuum setup and go with a Vintage Air Gen 2 model. Before I get started, does anyone have any experience with this? (Which model to go with, do’s and dont’s, etc.) It looks pretty involved. Any and all info/pics would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Who rebuilds original AC  accumulator dryers for 1964 Cadillac? I have been on Classic auto air in Tampa FL wait list for over a year ,  There is one on Old air products web site that looks very similar to the original # 21-4214A but states it fits 1962 Gm cars, The one recommended for a 1964 Cadillac is half the length 21-4215A    What  is everyone using ? I would prefer to be as original as possible. Thanks

'63 Eldorado trumpet horn + 2 standard horns restoration

Posted by Les Eastling on November 15, 2023 at 10:34am 1 Comment

My son, unbeknownst to me, had all three of the horns on our 1963 Eldorado completely restored. We had recently added the Eldorado trumpet horn to the two standard horns and the sound was not very good... we had heard good ones so we knew something was not right... but there was not much we could do to get better sound from the 3 horns.

There is a restoration service called The Horn Works who my son…
