got call from shop today, the gasket around the oil filter adapter (???) was leaking and needs replace.  It apparently was independent of the oil pump 4 screw gasket that they replaced.  so i went out to see what he was talking about.  Now i dont have the manual in front of me,  but its the part, apparently that holds the oil filter, there is a gasket at top and bottom of this part,  he had it off ,so i called around a bit, fel pro didnt have it so they sent me to EGGE,, they had two gaskets, i am assuming they are correct from my description, and i told him to just send both, but my question is, if i were to search some more on some of the online sites, what would i be searching for as a description in the search,, what would the searchable term be.

Sincerely

Kim

As noted in the shop manual in several places
"Caution: Before installing filter assembly, fill oil passages in filter support bracket with engine oil. This will allow oil pump to prime itself when engine is started". The oil pump support bracket is circled in blue below, and area you add oil is pointed to by green arrow:

I see Robert had already answered it. My illustration will hopefully help so I will leave my reply.

yes,, thanks to the both of you.  looks like i need to get the upper gasket on the upper filter support before moving forward,  thanks fully, i ordered another set last week, and be here soon,,,

so i am going to replace the oil filter cover gasket, then, remove oil filter, and the oil filter bracket at the top that the oil filter is attached to.  pour oil into the hole at the top, then replace the gasket  number 1844, the filter attachment bracket, then the filter,,

at least, that looks like the way it needs to be done from my reading of your notes.

thanks again

Jason ,on this same subject , seems like I have heard somewhere ,someplace, that the oil pump could be filled with Vaseline to prime the pump. Gotta love some of the unique and odd things on these old cars.. Met a fellow with a 63 Pontiac Safari station wagon. Said his transmission called for whale oil. Try finding a couple quarts of that nowadays HA HA.

funny you mention that,, the shop guy said he needed a cool engine to replace the gaskets so that he could put vaseline in there to prime the pump,, so , I'm guessing while maybe capable of taking me for a ride,   he has some of the alternative knowledge.

japan still whales,,call tokyo,,

Robert, I've heard that too. Always sounded odd to me when you could just put oil in there since that is what it is going to be pumping through the gears anyway .... and not to mention you permanently have Vaseline in your engine!

Im guessing that this [see picture] is were the leak was,  as Kevin once said, flopping like a dick in a sleeve.  The gasket was adhered all the way around with some sort of yellowish adhesive,  except on the bottom of the cover, were it was leaking.  The lack of adhevise left a nice minute gap for the earl to easily slide out.

I will use one on the permatex products on each side of the gasket to aid in seal,  would that be the correct sealing processm

On a second note,  what is that nozzle that sticks out the side of the cap for,  it has a screw cap, so its meant to be removed for some reason,  isnt it?  I

Kim are you referring to the oil pressure regulator? There is a spring and plunger in there that regulates the oil pressure going to the engine.

Clovis, the part of the oil pump cover were the pen is pointing to.

Yep thats the oil pressure regulator. Old hot rod trick was to put a heavier spring in it, stretch the spring or add washers under the spring to boost oil pressure a bit.

for my purposes, i probably shouldn't be fooling with it,, is that correct??

I wouldn't mess with it.

Edelbrock Carb Block off Plates

Posted by Chase on March 12, 2025 at 2:05pm 14 Comments

Hey guys,

I have installed the same Edelbrock carb and have done everything the same as Jason’s carb and intake project. In the spring and summer months the car starts, runs and idles great! In the fall and winter months on a cold start, the car starts awful and wants to die until it warms up. I have to keep my foot on the throttle until it warms up or it will idle just terrible and try to die. Once it’s warm, it runs fantastic! Whats going on here? I was thinking of removing the…

Loud air moving sound within carb with cleaner removed

Posted by Dave Fehrle on March 23, 2024 at 3:23pm 8 Comments

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?
