radio install

Hi All

i want to put a radio in the glove box, i  Iike access to sirius so i got one that is small, and fits in there nicely ,,is a complete am/fm sirius unit. so the wiring on the new one has a red wire for I'm think is power, according to manual, a yellow one for what the manual says is to the battery.  green/black for speakers, tha half dozen others for mic's and auxiliary stuff, i have no use for and a black ground,

so i undid the bottom panel, pulled out two plugs,, one has green/black wires going up to what i am thinking is the front speaker,,, plus, when i turn the radio on , it still powers up, but when i pull the 

a T shaped plug from the radio, it went power, so i am pretty sure i know the power is here somewhere in this plug,  it has  a Black wire the book says is "A" lead,  dark blue 67-66(all it says)  then

dark blue with white strip 60 62 63 antenna down

and a brown with antenna feed, that is what the service manual says are the connectors,, 

so, to hook this up, what do i need to run the Red power wire on the new radio to?  which slot?  and then, do i have to run a wire directly to the battery, for the Yellow wire as described in the new radio manual.. 

or have i not provided enough info,  i initially intend to just hook to the front speaker in the dash until i can get the mesh in in the rear for some new back speakers,, but I have to have some power first.  I know the original radio turns on,, 

any suggestions for thought.

I highly recommend that you do not hook up the original speakers, as they are the wrong ohms and will burn up your new stereo.

Leave the antenna connector plugged in, otherwise your antenna will not go up or down. Just tap into the radio hot wire that is the black wire.  Hook up the red wire on your new radio to the black wire going to the stock radio.  Connect the new radio's yellow wire to a constant hot fuse or plug on the fuse panel.   You will need to connect the ground wire on the new radio to the frame of the dash.

I used a generic custom stereo mount box and I mounted it up under the dash pad.  A frame has to be put in to support it, but I like it better than sitting on the floor of the glove box.

So i just splice into that black wire that feeds the T type plug,, ??  and that will also allow power to the stock unit that will push the antenna up and down, is that correct.

also, what is considered a hot fuse or plug,, would that be like a cigarette lighter or lights to the doors?  or is there a better source for that power?

Test the black wire to be sure it is a switched hot wire.   If you do not want to cut into any wires, just find a switched hot wire on the fuse box.

Switched hot; A wire that is not power when the ignition is off.

Constant hot; A wire that has power with the ignition off.

I use a test light, easy and simple to use.  The fuse box has 2 side plugs. One is for the power windows and is a constant hot. The other is for additional accessories, and it a switched hot.

ok,, i got the wires sorted,, ran the red wire acc to the black wire from the radio,, ran the yellow (battery wire) to the cigar lighter wire just to see if i could get power to the unit.  Grounded black wire from new radio to the frame,, Nothing,, I tested my wires with he voltmeter,,before hooking up,, i have power wen key off to cigarette wire,, i have power to the black radio wire when key on,, as i am guessing it should be.  then after hooking up and testing for power nothing again,, so i decided to chk the wires again, no power to the black radio wire when key on,, i cked radio fuse,, it was blown,  so now,, i took the radio, twisted the red and yellow power wires, stuck to positive on battery, black on neg, and voila,,!!  power to the radio.. 

now,, i only have an AM radio,, and noted in the FSM that am/fm is a 15 amp fuse and the AM is a 7.5 fuse,,,, is it possible that the new radio which is am fm with accessories,, has to much power needs and is blowing the 7.5 fuse???  if so, what is my remedy to get enough fuse resistance to keep the radio going

Put a 15 amp fuse in place.

do they make a stubby 15 amp fuse,, doesnt appear a long one will fit there...

ok,, found stumpy fuse, plugged in,, all is well,, old radio works, antenna works an new radio turns on as well,  i ran the battery wire to the cigarette plug but think i need to find a little more suitable wire for that,,

did you say the windows would be a good switch for that??

now just need to hook up the speakers,, thanks for the help

This is personal opinion; Never cut into wires to get power. Always run a power wire to a fuse box.

i ordered some of those snaps for the fuses,,

currently, i have the always on power to the cigarette lighter wire,, so i should use one of those clips and attache to a fuse that has maybe windows, or the slot that says ACC,, 

and the other wire is tied into the wire that feeds the radio,, what fuse clip would i need to attach that to avoid tying directly to an existing wire.??
