As i have had a little starter trouble.  i was wondering,

after you turn the key, and the starter turns over and the engine starts,, does the starter have any further input or drain on the engine from the start forward.

Since the other day, when i had that episode where the engine fired up quickly after a 4 day layoff, and rode nicely for 30 minutes,, then, when i shut it down for 30 minutes, it was a complete no go,, just that heavy clunk sound... then,, 2 hours later, fires right up, and every day since, it has fired up immediately, so i am just wondering if there could be something else involved, and is the starter isolated from battery charge etc once the engine is running,, does it have any more function once started

Sincerely

Kim

No
Once the starter is done starting the car it just sits there. I believe Cadillac was one of the first cars with the "self starter"

Well,, i decided to at least try to put a new battery cable on it, and while trying to break the nuts, it broke the plastic housing around the solenoid.  it alsmot crumbled apart, so, thankfully, i have th starter i had previously ordered.. i have cut the wires back an inch or so to find fresh wire, put on new loops to go over the post, got the new battery cable, and have it all set up to hook up and set back iim tomorrow...

hopefully, this will cure the starter ups an downs, an also, the parts for the PS pump and the oil pump will come in friday,, and i can finish up on this,

once in,,,and bolted back up, are there any procedures to follow for new starter or should it fire right up??

thanks for the help,   will post up date when starter in,,,

Yeah, don't over tighten that nut like every other clown does.

My new one even had a tag saying so...

which nut are you referring to,, the engine attachment screws that hold it to the body or one of the other three,,

The one that holds the battery lead to the solenoid.

Tight, but not over-tight.

You can change out the starter solenoid, but the starter will need to come off to do that.

yes,, i have pulled the whole thing,, put new ends on the 3 wires, got anew battery cable,,, for the 63 model.. and will try to reset the starter back in today,, dam thing is heavy and my working conditions are rudimentary at best,, hopefully, once reattached, it will fire up and i will be on my way,,

Ok. Success!!! Sort of :(. Got everything back together, 40 lbs of tight on attaching. Unit slid in nicely, locked in. Smooth. Hooked alterater cable to battery cable at post. Cleaned tighrened, gave the key a turn,,,,,,bam!! Ignitiin. No more cu clun cu clunk. Turn off, minute later, turn over again. Perfect. Dud again bout 2 min later. DEAD!! I mean notjing. Nada, ! Just the liggt came on. Went back inside, came out, tried again. Bam! Started right up. So, now not sure what to do. Woukd this b normal for first couple of turn overs?

I hope you mean "Battery Cable" rather than accelerator cable. :-)

Do as Mr. Thermostat suggested, make sure all your battery terminals are clean, and check all the earths...... there's lots of'em

Well. The configuration i was duplicating had a wire from bk of alternator attached to along side the baterry cable attachment. And it is then attached to the battery post.

i pulled cables off battery, scraped them all down with a wire brush till shiney,  tightened down very tight,, started car,, started right up,, took around block, turned it off,, click, ,, click click on three tries,, not the clunk clunk clunk,, just a click at the key,, then, all of a sudden ,4 th time, fires right up,, to be sure, the new starter, when it starts,, is much more powerful,, really turns it over.  ,, just  concerned with this clik click thing.. not knowledgable enough about these things to even know where to look,, or begin,, BUT,, it does start nice when it starts,,

1963 RHS A/C kick panel - photos needed

Posted by SK on June 2, 2025 at 2:20pm 2 Comments

Could someone post front and back photos of the 1963 right-hand kick panel with A/C?

My car didn’t come with the original kick panels, so it's a bit of a mystery to me how I should cut the backing board and carpet to fit around the A/C.

Many thanks,

Edelbrock Carb Block off Plates

Posted by Chase on March 12, 2025 at 2:05pm 14 Comments

Hey guys,

I have installed the same Edelbrock carb and have done everything the same as Jason’s carb and intake project. In the spring and summer months the car starts, runs and idles great! In the fall and winter months on a cold start, the car starts awful and wants to die until it warms up. I have to keep my foot on the throttle until it warms up or it will idle just terrible and try to die. Once it’s warm, it runs fantastic! Whats going on here? I was thinking of removing the…
