Well I just had my first breakdown in my '64. I was cruising along nicely at 65 mph when all of a sudden the engin race with no power to the transmission. I was able to cost to the shoulder with the engine running. I tried going in drive, low and reverse but the car wouldn't move. I turn off the car while waiting for a tow. When I went to start the engin, the starter turned but it wouldn't turn the engine over. Any suggestions on where to start troubleshoot?

I would "guess" the flywheel flex plate has failed. I would pull the flywheel inspection cover and take a look. Did you hear any noise or feel any vibration prior to the breakdown?

David is correct. If you do not see any other obvious issues with the driveshaft, U Jointss, etc, pop the inspection cover.

I didn't hear any noise or feel a vibration but I'll be able to get under the car to inspect it couple of days.
To replace the flex plate, do I need to remove the transmission?
I finally got under the car, removed the inspection cover and sure enough the flex plate is broken.
Jason do you have any used plates available?

I am out of the 64 THM flexplate. I would post on our wanted forum - www.wanted.6364cadillac.com I will also put you down for one on my Wait List.

Sorry to hear it, Bob. I'd check the axle for any obvious breaks or damage, and if okay assume it's trans-related. Flex plate is a likely culprit. Did you leak any fluid, is the trans up to the proper level? You'll remember last year my trans pan leaked and once low on fluid, the trans was not happy at all; I lost reverse and one forward gear. Luckily it was a cheap and easy fix.

Let me know if you want an extra pair of hands while inspecting or yanking the trans. I borrowed an old transmission jack from a neighbor when I thought I'd have to drop mine, and I still have it.

Edelbrock Carb Block off Plates

Posted by Chase on March 12, 2025 at 2:05pm 14 Comments

Hey guys,

I have installed the same Edelbrock carb and have done everything the same as Jason’s carb and intake project. In the spring and summer months the car starts, runs and idles great! In the fall and winter months on a cold start, the car starts awful and wants to die until it warms up. I have to keep my foot on the throttle until it warms up or it will idle just terrible and try to die. Once it’s warm, it runs fantastic! Whats going on here? I was thinking of removing the…

Loud air moving sound within carb with cleaner removed

Posted by Dave Fehrle on March 23, 2024 at 3:23pm 8 Comments

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?
