Gentlemen,

How do I fix this (without inadvertently setting the car on fire)?

Michael, this insulation was installed upside down. That is the backing tearing off & hanging down. You will have to remove it all, clean the mounting surface and install new insulation with the fabric side glued to the hood. Some cars (like my 76 Seville) have the fabric side down but it is attached with clips, not glue.

Kurt,

Thanks for the post.  Do you know where I can get the insulation and proper adhesive?

Mike

If you Google "1964 Cadillac hood insulation" several suppliers pop up. I bought mine so long ago, I don't remember where I got it. You will also find several discussions online as to which side goes down. I remember researching that before installing mine. Actually on the original insulation, neither side had a fabric backing. I used contact cement to attach mine. The fabric backing offers a more uniform surface for the glue to adhere to.

I’ll look it up today.

I have a cruise event tonight.  Do you think it will be a problem to duct tape the insulation up until I get the new insulation?   I’m concerned about the current falling insulation getting caught up in the belts, and removing it my result in excessive heat on the hood metal and damage the new paint.  Thoughts?

You can duct tape it in the meantime. I understand your concern about your new paint. Personally I drove my car for years with no hood insulation, even after I got my car painted and the heat was not excessive enough to damage the paint. I think the insulation is mainly for sound deadening as I've seen many cars with no hood insulation from the factory. The diesel Cadillacs from the 80's had extra hood insulation to muffle that clattering Olds diesel (a sound which I actually like : )

Gentlemen,

Thank you for all your advice.  I ended up simply pulling off the insulation that was hanging down and went to the cruise. Had a great time!

Ordered new insulation from Caddy Daddy And will install it when it arrives.

Problem solved!

Mike

Today I removed the hanging hood insulation, cleaned the contact surfaces, and installed the new insulation.  Looks pretty good.  Thanks again for the all the advice.  By the way, I don’t know why the photo keeps turning. ;-)

Loud air moving sound within carb with cleaner removed

Posted by Dave Fehrle on March 23, 2024 at 3:23pm 8 Comments

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?

Vintage Air AC

Posted by Chase on March 21, 2024 at 5:55am 0 Comments

Hey everyone, has anybody done a Vintage Air AC/Heat setup in their car? I want to bypass the old vacuum setup and go with a Vintage Air Gen 2 model. Before I get started, does anyone have any experience with this? (Which model to go with, do’s and dont’s, etc.) It looks pretty involved. Any and all info/pics would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
